Most importantly, you must know how to communicate with the hairstylist. The fact that TS got a army head cut shows that he's probably too shy to talk to the hairstylist or doesn't even know what he wants.
So yea, it's the TS, not the hairstylist that needs to be changed. -
i always know what i want, so i wont let the hairdresser to do what he/she likes.
Usually, i will show him a photo of what i want, or i will emphasize what exactly he will need to do. Or i'd just trim it
There are times, but rarely, that i tell the hairdresser to give me somethin new, but then i will see how it goes.... Listen to his idea and see if i like it.

i go to pointers at far east plaza once every 3 weeks.
and i tell them:
thin top sides and back
layer back
keep/trim fringe (depends on existing length)
keep sideburns -
I usually tell my barber, "Top and back make it thin, sides give me high slope, back give me V-shape, front don't cut and sideburn natural" and this is what comes out:
