To be honest, I've passion in cooking more than baking, but I've a friend who's a chef in a 5 stars hotel now, also a ex student of Shatec, he advise me to go for Pastry and Baking 'cause there're a lot of things girls can't do in the kitchen.
Also, guys are more likely to be raised to be a top chef or something, whereas, not girls.
If I take pastry & baking, my opportunities in the future, would be better than culinary skills.
I seriously do not know, I really have more interest in Culinary Skills dip, but also, I like baking as well, just not as much as cooking lah.
Oh and I heard the teachers for Culinary Skills in shatec changed after it was take over or something, then it's like, the standard dropped for CS? Not for P&B?
Any experienced chef or shatec students?
i want my heart to be prepared for the obstacles if i take those courses.Originally posted by mr_sotong:do wat your heart tells u..

BUT BUT! If it's really true when I opt for culinary, my future wont be as bright as being a pastry...what's the point!Originally posted by Lorry`:you said it yourself.... you've passion in cooking more than baking
the second part in bold.... sounds like he's the type who thinks women are weaker than men
Go for what you like, dont get influence by people
Nope, you didn't scare me.Originally posted by 4getmenot:Not true, if you are good, you are good.. times have changed, just like in the past whereby females were supposed to rule in the kitchen but you see more males cooks than female than ever..
Just follow your heart and take up the course whichever interest you becuz cooking is all about heart and interest.. wats the point if you take up pastry but your heart is in the hot kitchen?
Besides if you dun like culinary, you can always opt to switch to pastry department when u start work, some hotels have tendency to give preference to vacant position to inner kitchen staffs.
And if you plan on taking pastry, do keep in mind that pastry is not only just about baking cakes and bread.. there are also specialise individuals who are chosen to be artisits.. sugar works, chocolate works.. etc. this jobs are all highly skilled and are paid very well...
The bottom line is, are you prepared for the lifestyle of working long hours, on holidays etc?
If you want to be a Chef, do take note that you should be more less knowledgable in all fields (since you will do menu planing..banquest planning menus.. etc.. ) did i scare you?
But if you ask me for an opinion where money matters... pastry chefs are highly paid more so than an average chef, sometimes even more than executive sous chef or executive chefs..

there's no one course better than the other....
agree with 4getmenot, if your good, you are good
Good luck

I've passion & interest for cooking, I've interest in baking. I'm more familiar with cooking than baking, as for now.Originally posted by ben1406:before you start thinking about pay and glamor, ponder about this. the amount of hours you work daily, your starting pay won't even be enough to pay your rent or get the latest Ipod, forget about Chinese New year or Christmas Holidays or better still, if you are attached or married, say ciao to valentine's day...
not every one will get to be a chef upon graduation.. trust me, it is not a easy line. i've worked in Singapore before and now in Canada.. YOu might think it's fun and all but if you don't have the passion, forget about it. think 20 years from now, will u still be happy if you don't get the head chef position ?
i've worked with cooks in Singapore who are in their 40's... 20 years in the field but still a cook. if you do, good on you and i welcome you to the culinary world. think hard dude...

i think she just meant a chef working in a 5 star hotel, not executive chef.., ppl tend to misunderstand when they think chef means he's in charge of the whole kitchen operation.. but the fact is the ranking goes like somewhat like this in a typical 5 star hotel..Originally posted by ben1406:FYI, there are alot of good female chefs around.. wah so li hai. Do u watch Hell's Kitchen btw? Wld reco u to watch coz u seems quite interested in cooking..Originally posted by 4getmenot:i think she just meant a chef working in a 5 star hotel, not executive chef.., ppl tend to misunderstand when they think chef means he's in charge of the whole kitchen operation.. but the fact is the ranking goes like somewhat like this in a typical 5 star hotel..
3rd commis cook
2nd commis cook
1st commis cook
Leading cook
Asst Chef De Patie (his underlings call him chef..)
Chef De Partie
Junior Sous Chef (can be several of them..tis is the start of a position where your skills are recgonised)
Sous Chef (Woot!! almost there!!)
Executive Sous Chef (One more and i am king!! xD)
Executive Chef (the King of the kitchen, sits in office most of the time, menu planning, food costing, and lets Executive Sous Chef run the show)
and yes, you do not become a chef even after you take on a 3 year culinary course in shatec, what you learn in shatec is just minimal basic and when you come out to work in the industry, you'll notice that things work in a different way.., you'd probably start from 2nd commis or if you;re good, 1st commis..
climbing the stairs to be chef take years..so have patience

dun worry bout that lar, aiyor.. there are plentiful of assistans around in the kitchen who can do that for you if its too heavy etc... and you dun pour a whole potful of hot soup into another container.. wyou use a a large ladle.. and you think pastry doesn't have heavy machinery.. wait till u see the mixers..Originally posted by skeletonsAREcute:can i ask is it really harder for a girl to be raised in positions and also tougher to cook, say pots too heavy, too hot.....blah...
if it's really harder for me to be raised in culinary line, why not i go for pastry one?
