i think theres nothing much one can do to stop... unless the person will switch off the music without talking back. most of the time i think it will lead to a quarrel...

i play it at low volume and put the speaker beside my ear

It's always a plus point to invest in a good earphone in such situations.

many times, u see people with their headphones and overly blast. They do not realise that the music is so loud that other people can hear it. These really irritate people around them. So, pls lah, be considerate to adjust the volume even though you have good quality headphone. I agree. Headphones are sad. the music escapes through the phones. That's is why good earphones provides noise reduction and other features to enhance your listening pleasure; protect your ears and not overly blasting it.

Happens on mrt, on the bus, even in classroom. Sigh. Worse still some of the music is those which I hate.

Yes, and to add to that, the reason why they become Mike Tyson or Sonny Liston is because they want to save face. I ever witnessed this situation where this woman spoke very politely to this guy and asked him if he could lower the volume. She didn't ask him to turn it off but just lower the volume. She was busy typing on her PDA. The young punk raised his voice, louder than the music and screamed vulgarities at her. The hoodlum dared her to use the phone to call her husband or boyfriend to come and fight him on her behalf. The woman very calmly phoned - must be SingTel operator and asked it there was an SMRT hotline or if there isn't to transfer the call to the police station as there's a "lunatic going beserk on the train".
