there's an very old pitiful old lady collecting used drink cans and cartons daily for quite a long time at the neighourhood which i lived in when i'm small
heard she had an adopted daughter who is married and owns and drives a car, and yet she come down quite frequently to ask $$ from this pitiful old lady
and recently, this pitiful old lady got scolded and shoo away by some cheena fellow who's collecting the used drink cans as well -

My heart dropped when i saw the pic, emotions just swell up, i dunno, maybe i have this softspot for old people. they, having worked for the past 50 or 60 years of their entire lives, should now be enjoying their retirement, but sadly, there is still a minority in this country who need to support themselves
anyways, people like her, who make a living by collecting cardboard boxes, treats every single cent like it's a treasure, if u see people like her, just go up to her and help ease her burden.
Ps: those who sit at orchard road collecting $ for a living are mostly fakes and the newpaper has once published that they earn quite a decent sum from it.
these people on the other hand, truely need our help ( just look at the umbrella -- a broken one.)

I think the TS was not trying to make a story out of it but make a point that there are people such as her out there struggling for a living at such a ripe old age. Yes, perhaps she is as you say, "willing and able to support herself by working", but we can also conclude that perhaps she has no choice but to continue to work to make a living.
I hope your experience with the Ah Pek who threw the dollar you gave him have not hardened your heart against all these poor ah peks and aunties.
We may not be able to support their living, but we should at least show some compassion when we come across them. Two dollars may not be much for you, but may be a very pleasant surprise for the old woman. -

Wee! come gal and guy, we are just here to discuss about old people problems, and it going to be a serious problem in the coming years especailly with our aging population, so hope we stop scolding each other ya. No hard feeling ya.
Let get back to track, i have also got a very rich fren whose ah kong is a very stubborn old man, he go out and work himself by collecting paper, bottle, cans etc etc, because he dun want to listen to his son or daughter in laws and is damn sick of staying at home, but he is damn rich, but just refuse to let go of works. And when the young ones confronted him not to bring shame to the family, he just walk off a few days n never come back. Usually he end up in police station, cos his sons call the police for help.
But being an outsider, this old man sometime come and talk to me, he got lots of history to talk about and lots of complain that in the end, i snoozed off. -
