What about Catholics,Jews and the other Christians? A lot of rules are bent by practitioners but some people just wont break the rules.This cleaner earns only $800 a month so whose fault is that? In the event of a fire the first thing a family member does is grab a TV to safety and I am not kidding on this one.Saw it in a dcoumentary on how important TV is to impoverished people -

another good example is India .... without enforced family planning like China, they are facing an enormous population bubble themselves ...
but I have this little theory about the conservativeness of a society and it's "fecundity" ... look at Japan, porn available everywhere, sex galore .... and they are facing a birthrate that's below population replacement levels ....
on the other hand, in Saudi Arabia, where women are covered up in head to toe, the average woman has 7 children ... and the population doubles every few decades ....
maybe, if the goverment is looking at expanding the population, it should clamp down on geylang and chase all the kways out ... -
Perhaps they think the government will always help them because they are so called the natives of Singapore.
These families may have more chances to procreate probably they lead a simpler life. Children are their main source of pride. In other words, if I do not have a job to boast of, I may focus more on my family, emphasising the fact that I am a family man or breadwinner rather than I work as a XXXXXX. -

...more sex does not equate to having more children.... there are many ways to practise safe sex...
So.... these people can enjoy having sex as much as they want but please...don't procreate when you could not afford it...
I propose that the Government should start a sex education programme for these people instead of just looking into handouts....

Malay Muslims take getting pregnant as a gift from God.
in today's context, we can see how difficult some couples try for a baby. some even try for years before resorting to artificial ways. this couple, i guess, has the luck from God.
it may be the lack of education scientifically. dont know abt the female menstrual cycle, contraception and all. lack of education in the finances too. dont know just how expensive it is to afford a child. what will happen if they dont have the $$ one day.
or it can just be plain ignorance of their affordability. hoping that family/people will help.
who knows in the future when the kids are all grown up, at least the kids can take care of the two of them. now people got 2, 3 children also get sent to old folks' home..
conclusively, there's no use pushing the blame, finding out whose fault it is. seriously. no point. just enjoy our deepavali holiday okay. -

I have to agree that many of these Malays are not thinking properly when they plan their families. As a Muslim in Singapore, I myself do not understand why these people want to have so many children when they can't support their family.

I acknowledge the lack of brains on the part of this couple but the contempt and outright racism visible in this thread disgusts me. We should drop racial harmony day - it is a farce. There is no racial harmony in singapore, only racial tolerance and i think this applies everywhere else in the world.
I have sympathy for the kids. They had no choice in their birth. The parents on the other hand deserve none. oh well..maybe they didnt have $$ to buy condoms.
As for the racial issues in this thread, well..look at the statistics. Look at and compare percentages. the percentage of malays in sg vs the percentage of local university students who are malays. Or how about the percentage of malays in sg vs the percentage people receiving welfare who are malays. Do some research and you get my point.
This the main reason why malaysia will always lag behind singapore. -
I acknowledge that the Malays here are relatively behind their Chinese and Indian counterparts in almost all areas - but statistics have shown as a community they are by and large catching up. However small the percentage, the university enrollment of Malays are increasing. Drug problems are nowhere near the catastrophe they were during the 1980s. The biggest issue facing the Malay community is the rise of social problems such as high divorce and abortion rates. You have to understand that the current generation is suffering from the failings of those beforehand - socio-economic problems are always a vicious cycle. Therefore, I find it admirable that the the lower echelons of the Malay community are at last making significant progress at breaking out of this cycle.
Such issues though, are not my main irritant in the postings of this topic.
What has social and economic problems got to do with racial harmony and tolerance?
If you're poor and uneducated, I still have a social responsibility, as a fellow human being, to show you respect. You don't spit at any man for no good reason, no matter if he is a millionaire or the unfortunate Chinese aunty who resorts to selling tissue paper at kopitiam for her earning.
The human tendency to moralize is forgivable. Even ignorance, to a certain extent, is pardonable. But the human urge to discriminate and sling mud at another group for being of a different colour cannot be tolerated for the sake of our humanity and basic decency.
My appeal to all members of SgForums is to don't let yourselves down by passing off the odd callous or racist remark. In attempting to degrade another race, you're just degrading yourself.
