Expensive school prom night

I really wonder...why is it so popular for schools in singapore to hold their prom night at some expensive 'high-class' hotel with a bloody expensive dinner (which can easily reach much more than $100)? Somemore, the students must wear the appropriate clothing which could easily cost up to $100.
Do these schools not recognise that less than half the school population can actually afford such dinner? Isn't it better to just hold a simple dinner in school which much more students can afford and more people can enjoy their last moment with their school-mates? Is there a need for such celebrations to be held in such 'high-class' manner?
I really don't see the point in holding prom nights in some expensive hotel when the same thing could be held in a simple school hall. -

i can say because i not from there
of course can crash. my prom night at sentosa a lot of retainees come and crash
and it's an unforgettable prom night with so much smoke outside the hotel -
i spent more than 100$ for clothing nia...
the cost of the dinner was like 80$
but what i can say is, it really let us have a look at these ex ex hotels and also learn the etiquette... from there can really see many people never go -_- -
If you feel it's too expensive, organise your own gathering with your mates at another time.
