I think it's between the act of being a gentleman and being feeling sorry for the wallet.
For me:
If I go out with a girl for a meal, I'll pay for her. In my opinion, it's the act of gentleman.
But if I were to go out with a huge group of friends(which consist of girl), then we split the bill. There are exception cases when the girl or a particular whose family's financial is not so good, I'll pay for them. -

Some girls are known to be freeloaders. Just because they are females they expect the male to pay for their meals even though the male is just a colleague, a common friend or merely an acquaintance. Real thick skin of them like those in my office.

If you're just out having dinner with no relationship between the two of you other than just being friends; it not being a date or anything then no you're not obligated to pay.

no lah, if 1st time u go makan with female friend, u pay.
then subsequent times, don't pay, but once in a while, offer her a treat.
it's basic courtesy.
if you treat her 300 times out of 300 times, she'll be freak out unless u're her bf/ -
