The silent societal code of macho-ness for guys to follow..

Any guys here believe strongly in it and follow it as if its their 10th commandment. I.e. Real Man should not do this or that. Things such as REAL MAN should not drink with straws, must have big big muscles and hairy chest, or REAL MAN should not wear pink color...etc...and is preoccupied with labeling others as 'gay' if they don't look or dress manly enough?..looking down on other guys (or even feel obligated to verbally bully) those who do not adhere militantly with this MACHO rules of being a man...This hyper-masculinity societal requirement for guys seems to be the dominant perception of what being a male is nowadays; and especially so in Western society, and to a certain extend in SG where there's a strong influence from western media. It has been said that it stems from the insecurity of those men in their own sexuality and the dominant homophobia in their society.
However, in contrast I've also noticed that East Asian society tends to be more accepting to guys with feminine characteristic. In fact, guys with a feminine facial features are considered desirable, i.e. look at those more popular Japanese or Taiwnese idols. I believe that people should just be who they are. Whatever your personality or physical/facial characteristic is, this is a civilized society and no one should be bullied or treatened with physical violence just because they are deemed to be deviated from the 'ideal' that is set for how a male person should behave.
Some people claim that guys should be bulky and strong, with a massive jawline and dominant looking face so that they can protect their woman. Protect from what? We are in the modern civilized age where people don't have to hunt for food anymore....

Although being macho has very few practical purposes, women (and some men) are generally more attracted to guys who are truly masculine.
That, itself, is enough to convince most guys to conform to these long-established standards. -
There was this research article which states that girls during certain periods of their cycle prefers masculine looking faces, while during the majority rest of their 'monthly cycle' prefers a guy with feminine-characteristic (i.e. less square-jaw, less bulky and hairy body...etc)

Then why is it that in East Asian cultures, guys with traits that would be classified as 'feminine' in Western cultures are considered desirable?

I think the criteria for girls choosing an IDOL and their SO is very different. Girls are more fantasy-prone(which girl does not want to have a fairytale-like romance?) and idols are a way for them to 'live' their fantasy. There were newspaper reports of happily married middle-aged woman chasing after idols like bae yoon jun and their husbands don seem to mind.
About girls prefering guys to be more feminine-looking,i believe it applies more for teenage girls who are in still in their growing phase. Older girls looking for a life partner are looking for things other than looks.
The main thing is still character and personality.A guy can be tall,handsome,muscular,macho-looking but if he behaves like a wuss,girls will run away.Consequently a so called metrosexual/ sensitive-new-age-guy can attract girls if he displays confidence and the right attitude. But the thing is those who belong in the former group are usually self-confident and more secure while some guys in the latter group may go to extremes in dressing up to conform to society's expectations,which usually is a sign of insecurity(hence driving away girls).
Its quite sad that many guys seem to be influenced by the mass media of the perception of what it means to dress and behave like a 'real man' but ultimately the most important thing is to be comfortable in your own skin,be more confident and display the right attitude.
The bottomline is girls are naturally not attracted to wussies.
