With all the fuzz about global warming and efforts to reduce emissions, there are heaps of opportunities thrown open in the field. India and China are earning millions from carbon credits already. Anyone interested or knows something promising to join in the fray?
Singapore probably doesn't have a lot of scope as it's a small and mature economy. But it has the financial, manpower, and technology to do good across the region. I'm thinking of emulating some projects already running in either China or India, since there is where most of the action takes place and apply it in the region. There are biomass power plant, eco-concrete, solar cooker, just to name a few.
If you want a good example of a green and responsible corporate, look no further than The Body Shop.
Though Singapore has changed and improved, we are far from been a green country. Our main aim is economy and is regardless of the impact it cost the person in the future.
A simple example is HDB insist that the residents use plastic bags when disposing their garbage while the ENV encourage the supermarkets to reduce the issue of plastics. This is very confusing to the people. Without plastic, the HDB garbage chute system will smell badly!
If I am not wrong, Singapore is the only country that is illegal to collect rain water. I wander why?
I am in the green business but I carry out my business overseas as the "green" approach in Singapore in my opinion is just a "show" without full commitment. This must change for the benefit and to protect our children!
In fact, with our strength, we can lead the Asia region with billions and billions of dollars opportunities but we are still too short sighted. Too sad!!
Our economy is especially vulnerable to climate change and if we continue to ignore it, our economy will collapse and this can be very sudden. A simple example is oil. Only recently, our electrical bill increased. It will continue!
I hope that with some mindset change we can be better off.
