For zi wei dou shu, take starting date and time of that lunar year. The stars in the palaces Rat, Ox, Tiger...etc. determine the fortune of that zodiac for that year.

Actually its all about the alignment of stars, the winds, the seasons, and the signs...like those once in dunno how many donkey years occurrences...
In the past people study the stars and look to the stars for answers...they will look for shifts and patterns of the alignment of the planets, moon, earth...
They will check the major stars...usually omninous signs are like those...red moon, eclipses...etc...
