Guys, I would like to know, could a foreigner survive in Singapore with only S$1.4K every month?
renting house? how much?
wat are the regular expenses?
how long are you going to staying here. where are you going to stay. what kind of a lifestyle do you want...?
I heard that the rent is sky rocketing lately, reaching as high as 500 a month. It could be expensive to live somewhere near to MRT stations, that's the only economical transportation besides bus to travel to/from work.
I'm not looking for a luxurious lifestyle, will occasional leisures cost alot? Is building up some savings possible?

hmm.. not sure though. maybe you can chek out the prices first ba
where are you from. why are you going to singapore. have you already got a job. not that you have to answer, but these are things that will affect your life in singapore...
it depends on a lot of stuff, but generally u'll survive with 1.4K a month...
i really dont know about the rent tho... r u just looking for a room...?
mine's $1000+++/month for a 4 room apartment. and it's subsidized! which means it ought to be more expensive for a 4 room apartment elsewhere.....?
and which part of the US are you in??? i know plenty that's loads cheaper.....
can lar..
1.4k
only have to feed urself rite?
but saving is a key to survive
There are many ppl making less thn tht and surviving. It might not be rosy now and will get worse as time passes by.But you can live if you want to.
survival with a few luxuries yes.
500 is the going rate now i guess. my landlord charges 500. i get wireless internet and the usual works, electricity and water. of course attitude plays a big part. like helping to switch off lights, the heater when not in use.

Bear in mind tat S$500 is onli the room. There can be cheaper..but usually in rural area wher onli buses will reach.
occasional leisures as in... to dine in a fancy restaurant or have a drink or two at MOS or watch movie?
food wise, if normal food centre or coffee shop (we call kopitiam), would be about S$5 for a meal (including drink)
transport perhaps S$4 to and fro
so give and take a little, daily expenses will be $15 (for 2 meals and transport)
one month, minus weekends when u do not need to go out, would be 22 days x $15 = S$330
groceries, toiletries, daily necessities = S$100 a month
leisure activities = S$100 a month
sometimes u need new clothes/shoes... maybe only S$100 every 3 months...
so it's not hard to survive... just have to adjust your lifestyle...
look out for places with economical food and stuff....
have some savings for rainy days also...
S$100 a month is not difficult
FireIce, that's a very good analysis you have done, thanks.
Does that apply to every area throughout the island? If I have to work somewhere near the airport, Changi area, where is the best area to rent a room?
i came to know of a malaysian chap, 22 years old earns $1200 a mth doing foot massage, sends $800 back to his hometown. Was a fairly good achiever, but unfortuntely had to quit school and come work to support whatever condition his family was having.
