If he like games, buy him console and games.
If he like music, get him mp3 players and CDs.
If he like photography, get him digital camera or camcoder.
If he like computers, get him a laptop, bluetooth mouse & keyboard, multi-function printers, softwares, portable hdds, lcd monitors, blu-ray recorder drives.
If he like movies, get him portable dvd players, plasma/lcd tv, dvds, blu-ray movies/players.
If he like girls, then hand-pick and pay for a social escort services for him on his birthday.

assuming you're correct when you say he's interested in you
thing is if you want to give him hope, its ok to give him something you choose personally, the item itself doesn't matter that much(just don't choose something stupid) he'll like whatever you give him as long as he knows you made an effort to choose something.
if you don't want your friendship to change into something else before you make things clear with him then better to share.
if still considering , might even take him as "spare tire", can also buy him one by yourself.
