  Man who attempted to rob UOB branch charged

  SINGAPORE: The man who tried to rob a United Overseas Bank (UOB) branch in City Plaza on Geylang Road on Monday was charged with attempted robbery on Wednesday morning.
  
  Ismail Shaikh Ahmad was charged in hospital, where he is currently warded. Police did not reveal further details.
  
  The 45-year-old accused was dressed in women's clothing when he entered the bank at about 3.30pm on Monday and demanded money from the bank teller.
  
  He was subsequently overpowered by bank staff and a security guard on duty.
  
  If convicted, he could be jailed up to seven years and given at least six strokes of the cane.  - CNA/so
