Hi all,
Just wanna tap on some heads here. Started to learn the guitar recently (only managed to go for 4 lessons over a period of 3 months before I got buried in my work again) and was thinking of getting an acoustic to play at home.
Questions:
- What's a reasonably priced guitar that doesn't sound like crap?
- Are Yamaha guitars any good? Heard their electrics are better, the acoustics are so-so only.
- Came across a local set-up called Maestro that claims to make really good guitars at affordable prices, any takes on that?
Would appreciate any info anyone can share. Thanks in advance.
Yamaha acoustic guitars are good for beginners. Make sure you get the steel-stringed ones.
Think you can get one for under $100, I got mine for free. ![]()

You mean there are non-steel string ones? Always thought acoustics come with steel strings, that's why all the kuniangs start off playing the electric to show off 'cos it's with nylon strings??
You're kidding!! Under a $100??
Electric all have metal strings. I think the nylon ones are classical or folk guitars. Yeap Maestro is local I think and I have heard good reviews about their guitars. Why not just go down to their shop to try or sth =>
good guitar can go up to 9k, for brazillian wood.
guitar and piano can be bought 2nd hand for a $100

TGM brand, when you're better, change. you can get them below $100
Mine is a Epiphone cost me over 600+. There's one Epiphone AJ100 going for $100+ at Swee Lee.
u can get decent 2nd hand guitars online e.g. sgforums' marketplace or phing.com. some even as low as $20!
Peninsula has lots of budget guitar shops, unless you want to get Gibson, then have to go Selegie.
Suggest you start with those classical guitars, nylon strings are easier for beginners. Not to mention the fret board are also wider.

I actually prefer the acoustic guitars cos the fret board is slimmer. My fingers aren't as long, so I have problems barring in those complicated F chords.
Looking to get an acoustic guitar for under a hundred bucks as well. Any lobangs?
Thanks all for your kind suggestions!
