Someone quoted, " If someone do not embrace their heritage, it is the same as a tree that have forgotten about its roots.".
I am someone with mixed decent. My I/C is stated as Malay and I grew up with the malay culture and upbringing. I recently found out that I wasnt decended from 'pure' malays at all.
My paternal grandfather = Javanese from Indonesia
My paternal Grandmother = sg malay
My Maternal grandfather = bengali from Mumbai, north india
My Maternal Grandmother = Chinese from China
So does this make me ONLY malay, or i actually have many relatives that I have from other races and countries.
P.S. Dont try and flame me as i am not being a racist or anything. I just want to explore my ancestors history and culture. Or does their culture matter? Am I considered as part of each heritage since I am of mixed decent.
Rojak
more important is which heritage are you brought up in and which heritage do you identify with.
Personally, i was bought up with the malay heritage, but i dont identify with it. As a child, I didnt really like people calling me a malay or chinese. I look more like my mother and my mother took on her mother, so i look like a mix of malay and chinese.
I dont know. It's something like an inner struggle.
Javanese and Malay belongs to the same group of ethnic. And it forms 50% of your lineage. Henceforth, your root is Malay no matter whose appearance you took on.
i feel alien already
Why will there even neccessary to have any inner struggle? Ur father is a malay, u are brought up as one, u adapt malay culture, so those alone aready made u a malay.
Is being a pure breed that important?

ts mentioned he wanted to explore the history and culture of his ancestors... so it does make some kind of difference.
same here. welcome to the club. there are so many people claiming to be mix blooded nowdays its not surprising anymore.

I do understand this. Malay and Javanese are one of the 'Astronesian' ethnic group. I soon found out that they are not the same. The cultures are similar but very different. How is having Javanese heritage makes me 50% malay?Javanese is Javanese. Malay is Malay. Ask any Javanese and Malay and they will tell you. Dont ASSUME that the two are the same.
What do you think is the racial difference between japanese, chinese, koreans, taiwanese?
technically, they are of the same ethnic group.
some of their culture is similar.
saying their "culture is similar but very different" is just bad logic or bad english.

Ok, if you look at it that way. My paternal grandfather is Javanese. Doesnt that make my father javanese? Not malay? I dont care what the race of my IC says. (In IC follow father). My bloodline came from different ancestry and culture. I was brought up with malay culture and western culture. Does that make me part caucasion too?
So, your notion that I am malay is not acceptable to me.
Since when did I mentioned that I wanted to be a pure blood? No its not important, if you implied being a pure blood malay. I am 1/4 malay.
When I was young like you I was confused about my own race now I just confuse people and I feel fine.I have Thai/Chinese peranakan/Malay blood.

the relationship of your example with the relationship of Javanese and Malay is the same. Michelle stone mentioned that being Javanese is the same as being Malay. It's saying, being Korean is the same as being Japanese.
I may have quoted it in a bad way. My apologies. But do you see the relationship?

Actually, to me they are the "chinese looking " asian group, so they are the same to me.
Just like "Malay looking" asian group is the same to me.
Culture just pick one to follow... preferably the one that your family is practicing... have fun...
So short Ninja. What you are saying is you are of mixed decent? and not really particular about which one?
it is not a question of who but what... ![]()

actually my point is if you don't identify with the culture you're brought up in, feel free to try others or even "make" your own. but there's no need to limit it because of your ethnicity

I think as a modern man there is no such thing as pure decent from a single race.A Hokkien guy may not recognize a Teochew to be similar,a Padang guy could be different from a Javanese and People from South Thailand are different from the Thais? If only we all dare to do a family search we might find something we don't dont want to know in the first place. But I say It is good to know cuz personally I feel certain race may not be well skilled at something but is well known expert at other things. So you find yourself somehow gifted with the various inheritance and learn to make the best of them.
