Personally had been trying to find ways to self sustain during this economic downturn and finally started a indoor aquaponic growth farm hehe

It's using fish waste for fertilizer and it does not require huge amount of space :)

The photo above is the first try of my aquaponics growth system but it had since been modified to a more advanced stage.
I do hope more people will start this project to self sustain themselves in the future so that in serious crisis, we can at least have some means of subsistence.
I hope you did not add a lot of chemicals into your fish tank that the fish waste is filled with fish medication etc :P
how much electricity does your system consume?
I wonder the cost of feeding and upkeep of the fish. + the cost of the system.. is it really sustain yourself or pay more money?

I think it's a lot.. ![]()
intresting.. up date here i bookmark this page :D
Actually looking at the costs sunk in, work, electricity and water....I think it's cheaper to buy vegetables from the market
Then again, it is an interesting hobby to pursue
Be wary of the medications added in the fish tank. They may not be fully tested if will have any adverse effects if consumed by humans. I have seen some fish medications that even have stated health warnings if the treated fish/plants is being consumed by humans.
tt's interesting.
my friend tried it but find the expenses quite high cos she grows stuffs like wheatgrass n buckwheat. She imports the soil fm japan, but can only use it once, then throw away.. was quite fascinated by her hobby whenever i go her house.
You would waste more money than you save...
what are you growing? edible?

Those fishes are common molly from the drain...very resilent kinds hence I don't need to give them any meds ^_^.

Not much since it's on automatic timer, now it's turned on every 1/2 hr...I can set it to 1 hr to reduce electricity wastage...but now on experimental stage hence will try again with other settings :)

This 'hobby' of mine have a goal of being self sustainable in food however you are right about the cost of electricity. My HDB window does not allow too much electricity to be generated via solar panels...hence still requires $ to up keep the utilities bill.
What I do is to learn the skills so that one day I may need to set this up in a bigger scale to self sustain our selves.
Do you know where our vegetables comes from? How much oil required to deliver the food to us? The oil based pesticides used in the farms far away? The amount oil used by heavy machinery that plough, seed, water, harvest, pack, chilled & preserve the vegetables and ship to us?
Do you know oil is about to peak in production in the global scale and not many people can get oil cheaply or even able to buy it anymore?
Simply said...Non-Opec countries oil production had peaked in 2004...and OPEC countries is doing artificial oil supply cut this coming 15 March 2009...
Yes, I blog about energy crisis at sgenergycrisis.com and other crisis but I do want to survive...so my project is a way to set a goal to help others think the same hence there won't be 1000000 jobless & hungry locals zombiefied outside in the streets rioting, protesting, robbing, killing for a job or some vegetables on the table.
Stay alert for more of my DIY projects because you might just need it.

Aquaponics is recycable & reusable...There are no soil involve here just small & medium size stones...hence no dirty soil to manage.
The fish waste is dissolved in the water as nitrate and got no smell, hence natural fertilizer with zero artificial chemicals.
The only chemical I use is the Anti-chlorine solution to remove chlorine from the tap water which may harm the fish...
Expense is relatively cheap after the initial cost of setup and yes the return of investment is very low for now...but if I scale up the project...I may get quality organic vegetables for practically free.
I can choose to plant plants that cost more...but I won't do illegal plants like weeds or tobacco hehe.
This project can be scaled up to many buckets to one fish tank hence able to grow more at the same time with proper rotation I can get vegetables to be harvest faster and able to eat them for free.
The idea of puting up the blog is to impart my skills to people like you so that there won't be a starving family begging outside when the economy goes really bad.
We have to rise up and prepare for the days that we can't afford food or have no more food.
Money is overrated now as the currency will devalue over time due to corrupt money supply policy and fiat currency system that ensures people of power can print money from thin air. Google Fiat Money.
This economic crisis may hit everyone regardless of age, sex or qualifications...one day we might be doing 2 jobs to 3 jobs just to put food on the table and pay the bills.
Some may lose their jobs with heavy credit card debts or other installments to pay up may resort to white/blue collar crimes.
The desperate will cause more robberies to violence in the family.
suicide rates will rise and many will go into deep mental depression.
My goal is to create some form of hope, a beacon of direction for people who wants it and a possible goal of self sustainability of everyone here...in Singapore or world wide.
Don't need to believe what I write...just know every detail of my project and maybe one day ...just one day you may need this knowledge and be happy that you can help your love ones or anyone in need.
How much veggie u can grow to sustain urself for a week?
The way i see it, its not enough.
For self consumption, maybe possible, but for a typical family of 4? How can? U will need alot alot alot. Not to mention the space needed.
But how is urs different from hydroponics? Same right?

Molly will produce enough waste?
How many Mollies do you have in the tank? How big is the tank?
I do use my fishtank water to water the plants and the bioload of my tank is very very heavy and my plants are growing like a jungle out there
