Hello all. I am currently doing my Masters by research at NUS and would be graduating in a few months time. I need some career advice here. If anyone is in the research line whether studying or working please help me out here.
I am interested to work for research institutes(RIs) like DSI, I2R etc. I feel more research opportunities are available in RIs than the industry. What do you guys feel?
Also what kind of career i can expect in the RIs? I guess starting i will be a research engineer and move on to become a research scientist or something?
What is the salary like?
Finally is a Phd needed to work in the RIs or for career advancement in RIs?
Lets keep the discussion to Singapore as i am presently looking at working in Singapore.
Advance thanks for any contribution.
if you really want to progress on in research, definitely a PhD will be needed ..

Ya, i guess so too.
Are you working in research area? Anyidea of how the work environment and salary is?
Hows the researching envoriment like in SG? Is it as good as in overseas?
If working in academic area, easy to get funding or not?

What academic position are you talking about? If research officier/assistant/engineer then you dont have to lobby for funds, your PI will take care of it.
Having said that i would also say that availability of funds depends on your research area. Currently Bio related, clean energy and multimedia are very hot in singapore. I dont think there will be any issue securing funds under these fields.
I'm a physical chemist. Guess I'll need to somehow gear my research towards those area lor...like hydrogen cell maybe.

Are you working as a researcher or a student?
I was to a recent career fair where i picked up some
Astar brochures. This is what one of them says:
"Fresh post-docs will receive a total annual remuneration package
ranging from US$32,000-US$48,000. More experienced researchers will
receive a higher remuneration commensurate with experience, training
and track records".
So if you are fresh Phd expect to get about S$4000-S$6000 per month.
And if you have some experience you can get more than this.
I also noticed that there also seems to be a lot of interdisciplinary
positions available. Eg Bioinformatics where engineering modeling and
simulation techniques are applied to proteins and such.
huh
PhD only S$4000-S$6000 per month? For the amount of work and stress level and responsibilities...? Hmmm....
I guess most of the salary comes not really from the paid research work in ASTAR, but also from
1) Patents (longer term)
2) Probably teaching in the uni as well.
I remember my FYP prof was both working in IME and teaching at NUS. He did his Bachelor in Taiwan, Masters in USA, and PhD in Japan. Damn zai...
Wish you luck!

YES. PHD is only getting $4-6 K per month. The work and stress is actually not that high if the intellect is there. But there is NO bonus for researcher.
Only passion is the driver for doing research.
astar got pay bonus one la ...
hmmm... can anyone tell me more about astar?

So what will you like to know about it?

I am particularly interesting in a rough estimate of pay-scales (for fresh post-docs, those with experience) and any info on pay packages. From above I understand that $4-6K for fresh PhD grads, but any other info?

Hopes this help.
Thanks!, any words (or thoughts) on the work environment there?

I am not from A-star, so I cannot give you any personal comments. Sorry.
