It means when a person follows his ego he usually forgo his ratio hence being called a fool or acting stupidly. But that person would usually ignore his stupidity just for the sake of satisfying his ego. Hence anesthetic.

fact: being stupid is painful.
fact: anesthetic is medical stuff that kills pain
hence, having ego will lessen the pain of being stupid.
Don't think it is really degoratory, but people might take offence at being called stupid.
