Hi, dunno if this is the right forum but i need tips on finding distant relatives..
I'm trying to locate my chinese cousins here but dunno any names since our family broke contact decades ago.
All i knew was that my great grandad came from shanghai and my grandma's cousin lived in a house with jaded floors somewhere round serangoon..
how about start from surnames first.
rare chinese surnames can be easily located from the residential pages as not many people have (maybe less than <1000)
if u can provide the exact chinese surname, i can start by providing you with the approximate pronunciations in Shanghai and it's neighbouring dialects. it is not necessarily that those ancestors who identified themselves as Shanghainese actually come from Shanghai oni, as some arrived from eg. Suchow, WuXi, ChangZhou, Ningbo are included in Shanghainese for simplicity, i.e people from Zhejiang and JiangSu province
following, you can seek help from the association called Singapore Sam Kiang Huay Kwan æ–°åŠ å¡ä¸‰æ±Ÿä¼šé¦† http://www.samkiang.org/index.htm at 41 Wilkie Road, give a call first 63321487,63379753, visit them and see whether you can find the lineage being recorded there. This association gathers people from the 3 provinces (ZheJiang, JiangSu, JiangXi) so u are not limited to oni Shanghai as mentioned in the scenario in my previous paragraph. aniwae, I don't think there is Shanghai association at all. if u can't find ur relatives, try asking the people at Sam Kiang Huay Kwan whether is there a more specific association pertaining to your ancestory

wow thats a start...
my great grandad was a runaway...only thing i knew was that his name was Olit(wierd name)dunno about surnames but Lee is a possibility i guess...
thanks for the info anyways...greatly appreciated..
try this government one... http://www.sft.com.sg/
option 1 is out. Lee is too common. Furthermore, Lee is Lee/Li in all dialects and even Korean
if the exact Shanghai is assumed to be his ancestry, the possibility of Olit in Shanghai dialect can be (for names, including crude possible crude ones)
O = , 下, , 哑, 奥, 澳, 豪, 浩, 桦
Lit = 立, 列, 烈, 力, 历
let me guess? 豪烈 ? 桦立 ? 浩烈 ? 奥力 ? anything is possible
Try Rednano's method, if not, then that association
added:
you can even look for the Lee association
0o0...thanks man...
thats a start..
