My brother lives in Singapore and loves it. I was talking to him last week and he was telling me that one thing that is very different is that it is very tough on crime and many things are illegal and the punishments are bad. I didn't believe him when he said that the cane is still used alot over there.
I was in prison in England for 6 months last year and hated being locked up after attacking someone but he said I was lucky not to be in Sinapore as I would have been in jail for a lot longer and probably got the cane. Is this true? Do they still really cane people? Do people agree with them doing that?
go read up on the penal code.
yes they still cane people.
yes i agree.
Singapore law is strict.

Singapore still cane people.
But at least we don't punish people like in Iran.
Some people support caning and some don't.
But if you have been a molester/rapist, most in SG will have support for you to be caned.
When you punish someone, they will turn for the worse. They would tell themselves to be 'smarter' the next time and to do worse things. Resulting to new crimes, new punishments, new preventive measures. It is a vicious cycle. Have you seen any prison which its prisoners getting fewer and fewer? No.

I'm amazed about that. Is the cane though only for the really bad crimes or could somebody who did something like what I did (got into a fight and hit the guy with a bottle) get it? And is it instead of jail or along with jail?

Along with Jail.
The heavier the crime, the more strokes.
Fighting usually results in 3~6 strokes, unless it is a gang fight or someone died.
Oh, and girls don't get caned, only guys.

strict law have nothing to do with why they can walk away freely.
it is enforcement and judgement.
and if people walk away freely from the court of law, they are not abusers/rapists/molesters. Only people who get charged in the court of law are criminals.

I agree.
Animal abusers often went uncaught as police do not put much attention on them.
Those who are victims of molestors/rapists, often dare not speak out for fear of shame, and even if their family members want to try charge that *******, they cannot do anything if the victim refuse to speak out.

There is where lawyers come in. Many are money-minded and corrupted.
Hence, they will use all sort of underhanded methods and/or loopholes to help the convicts to get away scot-free.
They say it is all part of their job. I say it is hypocrisy.
that is why they say lawyers lie and dont get caught.
anyway that is part of the system and how it is for as long as we can remember.

even those animal abusers who got caught, they still walk away freely aft paying fine.. and they go all over again... strict law? i tink SG law need to re-think abt it....
but strict laws on certain things, i do agree lah.... like the contrabands, kidnap(death penalty), n being a FINE country......
anyway, i tink if i were to suggest, animal abusers shld be abused the same way as they abused the poor, helpless animals - in jail term. n rapist shld be raped.

rapists use to be anal raped by those ''da ge'' in the prisons, but nowadays, the prisoners are getting more and more educated, and they know how to sue left and right after getting out of jail, hence such incidents are unheard of anymore.
hmm what about the recent case about the woman driver that was sentenced to 2 days jail and $10000 fine + 10 years licence revoke for killing a motorcyclist when she beat the red light?
