Its mainly to test your creativity and help build teamwork skills etc since you would likely be working alot with people in future and skills learnt in school will be application in future.

Projects will be indispensible even when you enbark on your working life.
I have learnt teamwork, how to get along with people who wants to create nothing but trouble, collate data, drafts, presentation etc...
Tiring but the outcome is fruitful and beneficial for me, because I know I learnt something out of it. Many brains are better than one. More people, hopefully more ideas generated.
Project work is short-lived death and glory. You will have another and another and another and it kind sucks when it takes up majority of your time while preparing for exam.
