Guys, I just came across some blogs/websites which are providing game console rentals for $20/day or so.. Is this considered legal? Console as well as games.. I thought its like VCD/DVD rentals, don't you need to get some kind of license prior to doing thaT?
u can baotoh them
probably u will receive some good citizen award/plaque
lol.. nah.. I don't want to create trouble for anyone.. Besides, if they are fated to get into trouble, they will la.. But I am asking this becoz I saw quite a few sites man.. If they can do it so openly, then maybe it isn't illegal? Hmmm...
Its good that you reply in people's thread FI, but your answers/posts are rarely useful la.. Everything might be a joke to you, but not everything is a joke to others..

He added, however, that the company prefers to take the softer approach
for now, and will advise errant retailers against the practice.
But he said: 'We cannot rule out legal action, depending on the circumstances.'
Ahh.. Thats a very interesting post.. Hmmm.. So its only Xbox which makes trouble.. As always eh? Microsoft.. lolz.. But void of warranty? Hmmm.. Thats no big deal actually.. And after reading that article, I think it should be fine with renting out the consoles and games.. Like they said, its better then buying pirated games and similar to trading/buying consoles/games off auctions sites..

say i buy a car
one day, i have no use for the car but my friend wants to borrow it.
i have to charge my friend some money for the petrol + wear and tear to the car
is that illegal?
the way i see it, it should not be as i had bought the car. the car belongs to me.
the car maufacturer have no right of say as to what i do with my car
same as the debate with PSP.
i buy my PSP from Sony. I mod my PSP to play pirated games.
Sony have no say that I cant mod my PSP as the PSP is mine to do as I want.

that is not friend anymore, friend come with trust and understanding.
So if he used the car to rob the bank, how?

Hmm.. Good comparison.. Then why can't we do the same for VCD and DVD rentals? Or there is no licensing that needs to be applied for when having these rental shops?

U can make the friend sign a document saying that he won't use it for any "wrong" purposes la.. Haha...
they have to sign something for rent the consoles..my friend "rented" a Wii for a week to use when in chalet..it's like indemnifying the owner from any misuse...

Yeah and I guess you also have to sign against causing any damages to the equipment..
define friend. If we are talking about best and true friend, we should not let them feel obligated to sign something, that is business, lack of trust, it either you lend or you dun lend, as simple as that, if a friend wish to borrow my car and i am worry about her skill of driving, i will just tell her, my family need to use it.
However, when you come to stranger, in term of money transaction and exchange of goods, it is business, and in singapore, you need to be register as a business entity. If nothing happen, that is good, but if something happen, God bless you, that is singapore style.

game console is hardware
while
vcd and dvd is software
while i know of rental licensing for software, i am not aware of any for hardware.
maybe someone can help check for those car rental companies do they pay licensing fee to toyota/ honda or mitsubishi

Hardware indeed but they do have some software in form of embedded systems in their consoles.. So they can make a scene about rental shops violating their intellectual property rights... But yeah, car rental shops, do they pay licensing fees to the car makers? lolz.. Cant be right?
renting of games or consoles either way is illegal by right.
by left, it is "legal" as long as the vendors don't officially crack down on it.
this was mentioned some months ago in digital life paper.
for e.g: game software is designed for single use license.
by renting it, it's no different from piracy.
it's like renting out your copy of Windows XP. u think that's legal?

which part of the EULA did it forbid renting of laptop?
it only state installation of it on ONE machine.... not restriciting it to only one user.....
so if u rent out the Window XP for installation on multiple machine on a time share base, it might b illegal, but not the renting of laptop.
To TS, renting of game are rather common else where.... so why should renting of machine b illegal?

sure, but if laptop sales worldwide decline sharply and vendors make noise, it won't be legal anymore. ![]()
