Thus is or is not the petitioner supporting NS? NS is about youths being taught defensive skills to protect our society to be prepared for adverse situations inclusive of outright conflicts, which is total and incorporates all aspects in engagement of defensive battles, details which are regimented down to the food they eat.
Should there be an outbreak of hostilities between nations and the 'priest' is called to war, will he be allowed to eat his special meals, or partake in whatever that is avaliable, in order to be ready for battle?
Why should other Singaporean boys be made to take on further responsibilities that the 'priest' should rightly perform as is his duty to society for being given the priviledge of citizenship even if by birth?
All in all, this is nothing to do with 'religious persecution', but more an outright attempt to assert and impose one's religion for special priviledge in our secular society.
Where do we draw the line then, when special priviledges are called for, in an equal secular society? This we must sorely ask, before we sign on the dotted line to petition. We are not India with adoption of their caste system in our society, or Muslim Iran ruled by clerics. We are Singapore, an independent secular republic.
agree.. when war comes.. don't tell me he will be exempt from protecting the country just because of his religion? He should know about regimentation and that being a Singaporean male means sacrificing part of his daily routine/ritual/habits here or there all in the name of protecting the nation
ya la..
since he has decided to go into priesthood, he shd have a special priviledge.
its not easy to follow god's will.. let alone a young boy who is so determined to be priest.

would you be one of the sanctimonious bastards blanketing him if the occifers let him get away with what is essentially a ticket to tuang his way through NS?
Nope, he just have to eat a special kind of food. Nothing so big deal about that. Unless of course its KFC or he is a snivelling lazy dude, then i will break out my ET stick.
Maybe his superiors should allow his family to deliver his food every meal time. $4.50 x 3 per day of SAF and taxpayers dollars saved.

If people want to argue so much, might as well sign-on and make the changes they see fit?
Yeah, and its ONLY a turban for sikhs or ONLY halal food for Muslims right?
As for senior officers, they got paid big bucks and some more get better food. WTF? Whats with the elitism?
Hindu Priests cannot eat food that is not offered to god first. Those idiots commanders are really idiot man..
krishna follower have strict rules to follow.

there must be more than meets the eye ..... which, of course .... we won't be getting from the TS ....
Not much info is given by TS. However, during my NS unit time, there was a Malay Muslim storemen who had a letter from Muis to allow him to keep his beard during NS. He was given the green light by MINDEF and still being allowed to keep it for reservist. Real nice guy, never heard him curse or swear at all in 1..5 yrs in the unit. From what i gathered, the Malay lad was a religious scholar and is now a Islamic religious teacher.
Maybe TS can advise the chap to go the same route using a Hindu equivalent of MUIS?

exactly ! .....
if you ask nicely, don't rock the boat, you'll get what you want ... up to a point ....
like I said ..... yet again .... we are all chaps who have served NS before ... we know that those career officers would more often than not, not rock the boat and thus jeopardize his own ass and career ......and everyone knows issues of race and religion is a sensitive subject in Singapore .... you can imagine any SAF officer who would dare dick around religious and medical issues unless he's sure what he's doing is the right thing ? ....
for them to play hardball with this chap ... the powers-that-be must have wasted kilowatts of electricity sending emails and memos and cc'ing it around, and destroyed entire forests printing everything out ...and knocked a lot of heads together discussing how to respond, especially after MPs and Ministers were hauled in.
somewhere along the line, they have put their collective asses together and decided to say NO to this chap ..... even after taking into account that this man is a potential shit stirrer, cos he's already gone to MPs and Ministers before ......
you think they would just say no out of bloody-mindedness ? .... and risk their asses and careers and crabs ? .... of course not .... that's why I do not buy the TS' story .... there are things that he's not telling us, only protraying himself as the victim ...
and of course, I have encountered such characters during my service before too, shit stirrers who just die die have to keng special privileges for himself, stay outs, no duties, inviolate weekends, early bookouts etc .... in the end, it's the other men of the unit that has to shoulder the extra responsibilities ..... my sympathies go to his unit mates, not to that shit stirrer ....

HOW U KNOW HE IS A SHIT STIRRER. hello i have seen many SAF regulars who are shit stirrers themselves... It takes 2 hands to clap. besides we dont know if he was born into a priest family.

because only shit stirrers would set up an online pettition and spread his personal story around the net in addition to visiting MPs and ministers .....
actually if his religion association or whatever send a request in certifying his a priest etc im sure some special arrange can be allowed if it does not affect his or his platoon's training.
like for example the part on the meals, if his meals can be delivered on time everyday i dont see why they should be so inflexible about this as long as it doesnt affect the training schedule and its not like his food is a 10 course meal that will be the envy of his platoon mates, its different from asking to book out for prayers everyday etc.
The priest made a mistake in wanting to serve NS, conditionally
When he decided to serve, he should serve fully, not on conditions specific to him.
The Army would make accomodations for him, like to Sikhs and Muslims, but they would not bend over backwards for him.
When he decided to serve, he should have put aside his priestly lifestyle and stick to a vegan diet for the duration of the NS. This can be arranged and the gods will forgive him.
If he will not compromise on his lifestyle, he should be like the Jehovah Witness, refuse to serve. And go directly to Jail, and do not collect $200.
whichever side you guys are on for this chap ... I can tell you this ....
the petition is definitely counterproductive, and the hunger strike too .... he won't get what he wants that way ....
that's the SAF for you ... stir up a shit storm, especially a public shitstorm, and you definitely won't get your way .... they'll play hardball, even if it's just to prevent the opening of the floodgates and having endless busloads of other young men stirring up a public shit storm every time they don't get some privileges in NS ....

our 1st class gahmen don't practice what they preach.
can't they just take into account his religious duties and let him serve NS without compromising his faith?
some people treat their religions very seriously and we should respect people like this indian priest for that.
i suggest the temple contact the CO or get the MP to write to the CO, since the CO was the one who suggested him to be clerk in the 1st place and CO is also somehow involved.
if the CO cannot solve this simple crap, then we might as well as strip him off his 2 crab or 3 crabs.
this is why i will be traitor to my country if war breaks out, as this land of crap is not worth serving. after this incident, i'm wholly ashamed to say i'm singaporean and am fully embarrased of my own gahmen.
Bro, if this guy is born a priest in a priest family, then its not his fault. In singapore, most priest are from India i believe and they are not locals and they dont serve NS as they are too old already.
A normal hindu and a Hindu priest are different class of people.
Originally posted by Man!x:Its only special food, basically vegetarian food which are sanctified, why are you spouting this sanctimonious bullshit?
Considering that senior officers have their own stupid corner in the cookhouse where they get coffee and tea all around the clock, or the ability to drive out and have their meals outside. why cant the SAF accomodate this simple request?
"sanctimonious bullshit?'
What next? Hourly prayers? Holy water in bunks? Non-carrying of arms? Cannot Kill? Cannot perform guard duty? Cannot walk on unconsecreated ground? etc, etc. When will it end? And that's only for the Brahmin caste. What about the other indian castes of Kristhayas, craftsmen, untouchables? How about the muslims, toaist Chinese, confusionists, the other denominations of christians, etc, etc?
Might as well scrap NS. Close down the army. Save taxpayers money. Let any enemies walk all over our country. Let them take over our banks, our schools and determine who gets to study and who dont. Let them take control of our industries, and who gets employed and who dont. Let the rich flee. Let the poor Singaporeans who could not flee become slaves to the conquerors. Let their citizens get their perks while we become 6th rate slaves, etc, etc.
Let's all flee. I have an international passport. I have skills, talent and connections to live a good life in US. Do you? Does anyone else in Singapore have what I have? I am sure there are some like me. What about the rest?
What about Ah Seng, your mechanic who honestly fix up your car. What about Ah Lian, her rice noodles are always tasty as well as her winsome smile. What about Aunty Lim, who always dotes on you whenever you visit her, even though she is not related to you, only that she had been your teacher? What about John, your buddy who always invite you for a boy's nite out whenever you are down with fellow buddies? You wanna flee, and leave them to their fate?
Who the fuck is being sanctimonious and care about only himself now?

I think priest rules are in black and white. SAF has got no case.
actually, this guy jus wants his food to be brought into the camp and hav keep his turf of hair (sihka) because he is a Full - time priest. It is as simple as that while some of u guys "over-exaggerated" his case.
If muslim can go for friday prayers, sikh is allowed to wear their turban, why cant this guy keep his sihka?
say he chao keng without knowing the whole story. judging him to be a chao keng jus by this post???
and the you say he is a shit stirrer?
and what does jenovah's witness gonna do with this case?
Just by 1 thread, u all can concluded so many things.....

No boy should be allowed to serve NS, CONDITIONALLY. NS is a preparation for outright conflicts. You think the enemy will fight CONDITIONALLY? Bull crap if the enemy will determine or care about religions.
As long as you are of a different nation, you are dead meat either way, more so the young who are strong and capable of rebellion, as the japs in 1942 showed us. Wars are inhuman, and best our boys be prepared for the ordeal, IN EVERY WAY. Hell! its only 2 years and not asking for their lifetime!
'Pay unto Caesar what belongs to Caesar and pay unto Heaven what belongs to Heaven' is a wise advice. Caste Indian had been ruled from time to time by conquerors. Had not they not circumvent such religious orders and made payments and yet remained true to their religion?
What persecution are these people alluding to when 'paying unto Caesar' is for the far nobler purpose of learning, protecting and defending one's family, relatives and friends? Isnt this the very basic ideal and purpose of religion?!
Sigh.....................

You are the only odd one out. Even the certified nutcases who had stayed before in IMH did their NS properly in my unit. The only pre-requisite for the nutcases to serve is to have their meds on time and on target, else they go amok.
If the Hindu priest can eat sanctified dried rations which by right, should last for a whole week, then he could jolly well prepped the rations way ahead of time. Else, why bother to serve the national service in the army? Second, before enlistment(i.e at CMPB), Madana should have enquired as to whether he should be transfered to another service like Police or SCDF due to his religious practices.
