Is it possible to learn to swim by yourself? (Without a coach) What are the basic strokes and which is the easiest to learn?
yes. I learnt breast stroke, water trapping by myself. refer to books
i scare of water.. so learn swimming need someone around .. in case..
Breast stroke its the easiest to pick up IMO.
But better don't learn yourself get a coach. Our lungs not waterproof.
to me forward stroke is easiest...
frog style beginners will tend to swim at the same spot..and scared of drowning if the face is not at the correct angle..
it's better to learn from coach who can teach you the correct technique. correct technique -> same result with less effort
I learn how to swim myself too.
Just try out at the children's pool so you don't need to scare get drowned
Last time I used a coach.
But I think is possible, but you have to be careful.
I do have friends who learn just by observation. But I used to have a coach to teach me the proper technique.

Haha. So I guess I could go to the pool and learn by myself. I'll have to wait for Toa Payoh stadium to reopen though.
i can swim by myself

Lol. What I asked is can you learn to swim without a coach to teach you.
I learn to swim without a coach. I just observe everything myself. Swim at the 1.2m mark so that wont get drowned. Then start learning trap water and breaststroke. After a while, can get it.

most of us need a coach to coach us when we swim the correct style

Observe well (keenly), and start shallow. Can liao, for averagely smart person (I guess). =)
Key thing is: start shallow. Else you might have no depth for error... =X

The frog style?
I recently saw this guy do the frog style badly.
He tried to say that he kicked twice. But all I see is a un-cordinated mess. He swim 1st stroke and kick very powerful, but he sink backwards 1.5 body length while he does his second kick.
Frog style has a smooth sequence wan. There is drag, then kick, then drag to pull up and kick to propel you forward.
Best to pick up a swimming coach for the basics.

Yah, I saw him sink, and was later more conscientious to check my body posture when I was doing my swim.
Frog can be more streamlined if you keep your body floating on the water instead of pushing vertically against the water.
