Seeing how much buzz there is nowadays about migration to countries abroad like NZ, I was wondering about the emmigration oppotunities for lawyers in Singapore, anyone care to share?
Do u have an LL.B already ?
And have u practised before ?
If u have not yet practised before, effective from 1 January 2010, a lawyer wishing to start practice as a barrister on own account (barrister sole) will need to have three years' prior legal experience. This is a change from the present prerequisite of at least six months' experience.
U can either be a Solicitor or a Barrister.
Practice by a barrister on own account (barrister sole) is governed by s30(1)(a) of the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act (LCA) and R12 of the LCA (Lawyers: Practice Rules) Regulations 2008. The NZLS must be satisfied that a lawyer wishing to practise on his or her own account as a barrister sole is a suitable person to do so, having regard to:
If u are just a student who just graduated from LL.B, you may have to take Legal Ethics course, as it is compulsory before u can apply to Institute of Professional Legal Studies to prep u to do your practical in N.Z.
But,
If you have gained qualifications in law from another jurisdiction but have never been admitted in another jurisdiction, you must apply directly to the Council of Legal Education to have your academic and any practical legal qualifications in law assessed. The Council decides whether you are required to complete a professional legal studies course.
When u are admitted into IPLS, do apply to the N.Z Bar Association, after that u can acquire and renew your practising certificate at the NZLS (N.Z Law Society).
But on a side note though, u MAY be required to attend course/courses if the law papers you took is not compatible. As commonwealth jurisdiction may slightly differ when it comes to legislation and its practice. Compulsory attendance may be required, but not the examinations. Law school is hard enough already. And if u graduated, they are not going to put you through it again. lol
Good luck
