Polytechnics up tuition fees
TUITION fees for polytechnic students here will go up this academic year.
The five polytechnics here - Nanyang, Ngee Ann, Republic, Singapore and Temasek - on Thursday jointly announced that they will raise fees for diploma courses by $50 for Singapore citizen students, and between $480 and $800 for new Permanent Resident (PR) students.
New international students (IS) will have to pay between $480 and $1,070 more.
Three polytechnics - Singapore, Ngee Ann and Nanyang - will also increase the fees for their existing polytechnic-foreign specialised institution degree courses by 3 per cent in this academic year.
The fee hike will also apply to existing PRs and foreign students admitted before the 2010 academic year 'to achieve a sharper differentiation by citizenship,' said a joint statement from the five polytechnics.
'Fees for PRs and IS remain competitive as compared to those charged by international and private schools to allow Singapore to to continue to attract quality students and add diversity in the educational environment,' it added.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, in a speech delivered at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Students' Union ministerial forum last September, said that the Government will, over time, sharpen the differentiation between Singapore citizens, PRs and foreigners to reflect the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship.
The polytechnics also gave the assurance that there are sufficient financial assistance schemes in place so that no student 'will be denied the opportunity of a tertiary education because of financial difficulties.'

ITE also increased...just heard from the radio....
Is it the right time to increase?
why increase tuition fees at this moment?
Yeah, why arh?
Make parents more stressful...need to work more hours...
reasonable.
why reasonable? the poly population is about 70,000 in singapore which is around $3500000.($50 increase) only singaporean. no clear explainations was given to the public and no consultation was made at the first place. it this what singapore education is all about?
u take money as the factor to differentiate between locals and foreigners regarding education. if u want to have a sharp differentiation, you should conduct the course in the foreigner language as currently the only way to distingish us and the foreigners is in the way we speak.
If they dun increase the fees, how to pay for the school fees of the FT scholar ?
Wool always come from the same lamb.
When got lobang, the lamb never get the good stuff.
When got trouble, the lamb always get the blame.
They want sharp differentiation? Easy, do it the other way round.
Decrease the fees for sporean. Why need to increase?
Dictionary no decrease word for them?
This is what you can win win.
You kill two birds with one stone.
You increase both end and earned both ends.
Any explanation for the increase ?
Better facility ? or increase in lecturers pay ?

First, you must ask when the last increase in polytechnic course fees were.
Also, the report did not state if its additional 50 bucks per semester per 6 months of tution fees, or 50 bucks for the entire duration of course fees.
