In today's newspaper,
There is some coverage about some commission or some body, whose head is quoted in saying, that there is nothing wrong with radio DJs using Indian accents for jokes.
This makes me a little bit preplexed.
One would think that as the chairman of such a body, he would be having a more enhanced sense of sensitivity. But what happens is the opposite.
He said, since it is a joke, and there is no explicit content which is insulting or denigrating other groups, it is Ok.
The newspaper in another article, reveals the result of instant street interview / poll.
It shows that nearly 40% of respondents say that they would object / be offended / disapprove.
Some of them are non-Indians.
This makes me wonder, why is the chairman is so disconnected from reality.
Why it happens that way.
Is this an indication of bigger things?
That once people sit as high level bureaucrats, that they lose their proper senses ?
Or maybe as a chairman of a powerful body, maybe he does not want to exercise his power easily, so therefore he hesitates, and as a result, overcompensate, or can not exercise his judgements accurately.
Whatever the case, there must be an evaluation. There is systemic failure.
This is the opposite case with some other bodies.
There is another supervisory body, who is so proactive and on, that they barged in into a private event, and stopped a movie screening and seized the CD. This happened some time ago. Just because it has some "political content"

The sedition law states that "implications or hinting" is also chargeable offenses. it means u dont have to make obvious racial comments, but just hinting will get u into trouble.
Seditious tendency.
3. —(1) A seditious tendency is a tendency —
(a) to bring into hatred or contempt or to excite disaffection against the Government;
(b) to excite the citizens of Singapore or the residents in Singapore to attempt to procure in Singapore, the alteration, otherwise than by lawful means, of any matter as by law established;
(c) to bring into hatred or contempt or to excite disaffection against the administration of justice in Singapore;
(d) to raise discontent or disaffection amongst the citizens of Singapore or the residents in Singapore;
(e) to promote feelings of ill-will and hostility between different races or classes of the population of Singapore.
actually even a simple hatred, humiliating comments or any words seen to cause differentiating views against anyone is a seditious act

Yo, ah neh, in hokkien and teochew, Chairmen mean blind men, so what do you expect from a blind person, just take his paid and enjoy life. Sometimes, i buy indian foods, they indians also disturb me with singlish accent, so how??? as a multi racial society, we must learn to tolerate each other, you cannot have the best of the both world, yes, of course being in the public, or as a public speaker, by taking other people culture or language as a joke is uncall for, but then dun we all do it once a while, like i like to use the PRC gals way of throwing responsible away...when something seriously gone wrong...just said... Wo Bu Zi Tau..(I dunno) and everything is not your problem already. Learn ya

This incident has people asking questions like 'Why pick on Indians and not others?', 'Why pick on China and not that?', 'Why pick on me and not him?'...
Its a chargeable offence:
(d) to raise discontent or disaffection amongst the citizens of Singapore or the residents in Singapore;
(e) to promote feelings of ill-will and hostility between different races or classes of the population of Singapore.
It is not, because at the end of the day, someone must be picked, it either you or he or she? There is never a perfect world, nor satisfaction world, everybody have their own different opinons just like everyone else have a different arsxhole.
In court proceeding, the judge on the intention of the violation , for this case the intention is not to disturb racial harmony but rather for trying to create a jovious conditon within a warmth atompshpere. But unfortuntely, it created a bit of tension on the group of race. The court of Singapore as in any other courts, do not seek to escalate cases, the court objective is to settlement thing at is lowest possible condition. However as humans are prone to and expert in stirring up issue, salt and pepper will be added to mess it further. The solution is simple, DJ apologise, learned his lesson, boss sack him and case close.

Its not simple, if every tom dick and joe has his way the sedition act will be of no use.
These folks who are mocking other's accent does show their inablilty to embrace diversities, arrogant blinded and swell headed poor creature! Probably insecure and having bad brought up and had to step on others to prove they knows something which actually reflects their gross lacking in something!
My thread got moved to ChitChat subforum by mod....
:(
So unhappy.
also listen to Chinese, Malay and Tamil stations, and I am grateful to the deejays on Chinese and Malay stations for avoiding this easy path to cheap laughs.
The defining factor is that I have never heard radio deejays on English stations mock Chinese or Malay accents.
Is it that they think people of ethnic Chinese and Malay descent have less of a sense of humour than those of Indian descent?
Or is it that they know in their hearts they are doing something distasteful and so pick on only those that they can?
Mocking of indian accent has been happening for ages. However, I feel that as DJs, they ought to have more sense and know that mocking of indian accent is distasteful, especially if they do it day after day. It not only sows discord among races (I might be exagerrating), but also gives people a bad impression of them. Hopefully, with this brought to attention, the DJs will come to their senses and stop this senseless mocking.
Kids in school if they listen to radio will go to school to do the same mocking at others,

My dear, Sedition act is more for politics, that is what CJ told me when we will have lunch at the Istana.

On the other hands, mocking of Chinese and malay by indians also exist, some of old indians gal classmates like to mock at us by making fun of our chinese names, but we take it as fun...so it very much depend on how you look into it, as i said, dun make the flame bigger, i guess the DJ will be reprimanded by his boss and he learn his lesson. You got to give the guy a chance, a place and a time to amend..this is call gracious.
.... DJs, Please do not be racist against other races on live radio.
Want some cheap laughs, do it amongst your friends or relatives, but not on mass media.
You want race riots in Singapore like Melbourne is it. Zzz....
I mean which are the worst accents in the world? I believe one has to be the filipino accent. The other is indian.
Think Yair India.

But being the majority race, it doesn't matter, But mocking minorities will breed possible prejudice and discrimination.Wouldu like to live in a society where yr own race is practicing discrimination and prejudice towards minorities? Every human deserves respect
If i am the commissioner, i would just haul those Djs to court at least to warn them to change their practices.

if u dun think its funny, then don't laugh, don't listen.

Its not about a few sensitive people, its more about a certain view being propagated that can cause tensions. In such light, the remarks made on radio comes under the sedition act
