I would suggest teaching of dialects to kids when they are below 6 years old
school work is not so hectic and kids are nurtured through a fun way of learning a language
i think the leaders of this country have a different view. Dialects are useless. Mandarin is enough to engage with China.
I learnt how to speak and understand hokkien because I grew up in primary school under my grandmother's care. She only knew how to speak hokkien. My command for english language was also much better than my chinese because during the same period I was exposed more to channel 5 cartoons. And the fact that my folks communicated with me more in english than anything else.
Primary school chinese wasn't too bad, till I reached upper secondary. And my insisted I focus more on english language at O levels than anything else because if you flunk that, you kind of flunked the entire O levels technically.
i think the best way to retain dialect is still remain with family that speaks. But it is difficult to retain full dialect as it is phonetics it does not hold its own written form.
Written mandarin will also evolved to keep up with technology.
the responsibility of passing on dialects does not lie with the govt but with parents.
many have adopted english as their mother tongue. i feel the situation is no longer reversible.
there are people who can speak dialect, english and chinese. and frankly you need not have to be an A student to do it.
like i said earlier, ä¸æ˜¯æ²¡èƒ½åŠ›ï¼Œæ˜¯æ— å¿ƒï¼ï¼
I guess I am a banana split. Can read and write in english, can speak but cannot read and write mandarin, curse and do business in hokkien.
so let's all start speaking our dialects and write them down so that it can be passed on to the next generations
Here's something on dialects~~~ and a laugh

Rock^Star, dialects in China are really on the verge of dying off already

oh no it's happening everywhere and we are helpless.
Taiwan's languages are also going for the worse, see here for one of my observations.
Now my mummy is in Guangzhou and Swatow and Fujian Province, she will report to me on the observations on language usage once she comes back.

We must observe our dialect usage, start using and start promoting among ourselves.
