Perhaps Clarke Quay is facing the problem of how to maintaining it's historical facet. It's becoming too commercialized now.

the no smoking in clubs policy is making the smokers flooding the "outdoors" (but still under glass roof)
no space to stand to smoke bcos too darn crowded
and makes the place damn, er, smoky.
too many ang mohs
too many drunkards
too long Q at taxi stands
I've never been to Clarke Quay for a long time. so i dunno what problems faced there.
littering, drunkards and maybe fighting there.
Fights and Rioting used to be common in the 1990s at Clarke Quay, especially the Night Spots along the area.
Those fights were not just mainly from gang-related ones. It's just that some customers were staring at them and innocent ones were attacked commonly at bars. Majority of the customers were youths who were drunk and turned rowdy, picking up a fight and many loyal customers were too afraid to patronise the area at night.

Before Clarke Quay was developed into a tourist night spot, it used to be a trading place with godowns erected. With old, dillaplidated godowns and warehouses that were in the state of dereliction, URA had decided to revitalise and redevelop Clarke Quay to become a lively tourist night spot in 1989 and completed in 1993 with new tenants moving into the area.
