Why void decks in HDB?

  Can anyone explain to me why HDB flats have void decks?Is there a reason for this?Why not filled up the void decks with stores and restaurants and enliven up the place and also a way to prop up the value of the flats?

  If there were no void decks, to get from this block to the other would mean you need to walk around instead of through them.

  void deck is called void deck because it is supposed to be "void"

  if they wanted something else there, they would have not called it "void" deck am i right

  I find that the flat design have a lot to do with sporean sense of isolation and helplessness deep inside..I don't know how you guys feel

  Social gathering space (also a space for ad hoc activities such as weddings and wakes) and ventilation. Due to design of slab block, very windy at void deck.

  Then they realised void deck is not a good space, then later on newer HDB blocks have lesser of void decks. and then there are multi purpose halls for wakes and weddings.

  You cant fill up every void deck with shops and what not because you need a certain catchment size for neighbourhood commercial to work. Thats why new estates always have one cluster of shops only at one place.

  void deck is used on HDB and lobby is used on condos lol. basically they are the same, but materials used are different and so is prestige.

  Imagine if there restaurants/coffee shops at every void deck,, how much noise it would cause..People can't take afternoon nap or sleep early liao haha.Competitons among coffee shops/Restrauants too
