HDB flats got a lifespan of 99 years but I heard that when the HDB block reaches 40 or 50 years old, the government will demolise the block and build a new block free of charge for the residents? The residents do not need to pay any money unless like for example, they stay in a 4 room flat and now they want a 5 room flat in the new house so they will have to pay extra money. If they go to the new house and still stay in a 4 room hdb flat, they do not need to pay anything to the government.
There are others who says that when the HDB block is old like after 40 or 50 years, the government will demolise the block and give you a new place to stay but you have to pay extra money for it even if its the same type of flat, for eg, you stay in 4 room flat and now in new place you also stay in 4 room flat but you still need to pay the government money.
Which is true?
You are referring to en-bloc scheme?
Yes, you can choose studio, 2 , 3 , 4 or 5 room hdb flats.
Supposing you stay 4 room hdb flats, you might not need to top up any if you choose a 4 room hdb flats, But you will get some extra cash if you degrade to 3 or studio apartment. But will need to top up if you take 5 room flat.
Spore as you can see, there are many many new high rise hdb flats being built or under construction. Cos old flats must give way to new design hdb high rise flats.

I though en block scheme is when the govt wants to build a new building like shopping mall so they demolise the block?
Now I am talking about demolise old hdb flats..
yes it is. for some places, you still have to top up even if its the same type of flat.. diff rates.
there's en-bloc, there's SERS...
