THE 261,700 Tampines residents who want to visit the library, play futsal, watch a concert or just eat and drink can find all that in one place by 2015.
This scenario for a buzzing heart of the heartlands was unveiled by Minister for National Development and MP for Tampines GRC Mah Bow Tan on Friday morning as he announced the Tampines Masterplan for 2011-2015.
The proposed project - dubbed the Tampines Town Hub - will occupy 5.7 ha of land, or about seven football fields.
Existing facilities such as the Tampines Regional Library, North East CDC, Town Council and HDB branch offices will be relocated to the site. In addition, food and beverage outlets, retail shops, a performing arts theatre and a community club will be built there. It will also contain recreational facilities like an astro-turf football pitch, badminton and tennis courts.
Mr Mah said he envisioned a central location in the town with something for everyone.
He added: 'It all originated from the old concept of a community centre where people would drop in freely. But in today's world where there are so many different interests, and people have so many places to go to, what we hope to do with the town hub, is to gather people back again.'
