one group complain about PRCs.
another group complain about indians.
sigh....
What I want to know is a set of concrete statistics about lack of manpower, that our local population cannot handle.
Otherwise all this cr*p about the need for foreign talent is a smokescreen for whatever the government really has in mind.
First we have to ask yourself, why are there so many foreign workers? The answer to that is simple, there are many jobs that no Singaporeans are willing to work. Construction work etc. That's why we need foreign workers. We have no rights to complain.
the whole world is in here
we r out numbered
If all Singaporeans are placed in air conditioned offices doing clerical and administrative work.
Then we will have no one at the cafeteria, no bus drivers, no taxi drivers.
These will have to be filled by foreigners if we want them.
Only small companies can have all Singaporean staff. The big ones have to poach Singaporeans from other companies or other sectors.
Do Singapore want to be a bustling modern city or a laid back island in the sun?

I doubt we need parrots here. We have heard that many times.
That is simply an assertion. Have we ever encountered a manpower problem when it comes to low-skilled occupations? What the government is doing is a 'pre-emptive' measure should this situation arise. But who is to say and predict we will actually have a need for more manpower if we stop bringing in more foreign workers?
Where are most of the foreign workers going into? Construction business. Do we really need that much landscaping? Do we need so many new shopping centres? Think about it hotshot.

Seriously dude? And you are basing this on what? Only a 5 year old would come up with this. *shakes head*

You go to Outram Park, half of the population are now Indian with sandals and shortpant, speak no English and observed every girls that come in to MRT. You go to Jurong East every afternoon many of them flocking in the green grass and sitting around chit chat on the green pastures. Go to China Town, it's become Indian Town now. In Geylang, a lot of them straying all over the streets. When the night comes they spread all over the city try to hide themselves and sleeps on HDB corner. Some of them live a shelterless living all over the city area. Can't they afford to pay the room rental?
Singapore has become Singdian nowdays. Singaporean hate PRC too much and the government already tighten the PRC to come to Singapore. Many of PRC visa being rejected. But how about these Indian visa? Thousand of black agency in Chenai, Bombay, Bangalor etc are offering job for them in Singapore. They sell their herd, farm, house whatever just to pay them and come to Singapore get a job here. One they get hired in SG company then they will bring in the whole village come here. Why Sing gov is closing one eyes not to stop or at least reduce these peoples. Gov reasoning that Sing or Chinese peoples doesn't want to work in hard job like construction worker, machinery company etc. But it's not true. China doesn't have Indian but construction are sprouting all over the cities. Many Singaporean are jobless today, their job has been taken away by these low paid worker. Aiyaa ... don't know how to say. Singapore soon become Singdian ... or may be already become one of it.
they indian or bangla?

And even these Indian construction workers have been coming here on work permits for donkey years!
Why are we giving PR to the china ones to come here and reproduce! Yes, it is happening. Husband earning $1200 as a construction worker, wife earning $900 as a factory worker.
i've been skimming the forums today and keep trying to wrap my head around how may of you keep moaning about Indian accents - what makes you think your accent isnt funny as hell to others who speak the language better?

I don't support their arguments. They are not all the same.
But we have been conditioned like Pavlov's dog to expect bad and arrogant behaviour when we hear it.
One can say that each person is different and their arrogance is pervasive, at the same time without being racist. It's jus the way things are.

>implying that their English are better than the average local?
I wouldn't know about you, but I feel that they don't understand my English most of the time... using imperial English... I have to use broken English... Even with that, they're like nodding... which actually meant no in their culture... sigh!
even with english better than average local. they ica wanna see is a skill cert and wat u work as in sg. ofcos if u are earning a 10 or 50k a month , pr or citizenship will comes to u automatically.
nonsense Aneslayer.
I had to take more time to understand what locals pass off as 'Imperial' English than I have ever had to, in any city of the world i've been in . No respect for grammar or syntax whatsoever. yet this ridiculous general pride in English prowess displayed here is baffling. a whole bunch of you need a reality check hard & fast
yea yea
I hadn't worked in other lands but I'd still insist of the median average. Just how many educated Indians against uneducated ones here in Singapore?
When in Rome, do what the Romans do. (And don't do what they don't)
Also in context... this is sgforum... Singlish is accepted as legit.
What a blistering counterpoint.

It happens. The china woman at NTUC earning how much? You think her husband is a rich boss, or earning about the same?
-Also in context... this is sgforum... Singlish is accepted as legit.-
your point is insular and the equivalent of an ostrich putting it's head in the sand
Valid no doubt, nonetheless. If we are generalizing, the average should be taken as reference. To be fair, I can bet that the educated locals are capable to execute flawless English should the occasion arise.
Not sure about those who purchased or forge their education certs...
"your point is insular and the equivalent of an ostrich putting it's head in the sand
"
I'm really in doubt that you'd know enough locals to really say that. Average Singaporeans refrain from using proper English to avoid the tag of being elitist...
I can extend that same argument and then say you dont know enough Indians to back your opinions.
double edged swords are fun, until they cut both ways huh?
That is why I insist on the median. Do you really need me to link to statistics to show that the Indian foreigners working in Singapore are in majority uneducated? I have basis to say what I've said. If you can't back up your statements, I'll just take that you are just ranting.
stats to support your microcosm of an island state? you seem to enjoy going back to proving my point of insularity. If thats the case, feel free to amuse yourself
If insularity is your point, you're only stating something irrelevantly obvious as all the subject lived, breathed and work on the island.
You claimed that the locals' English are bad. Insularity does not back that claim.
You claimed that the locals English are not up to imperial standard. I claimed that the average locals have better English that the Indian FT's. Back up your claims or just back away to where you came from.
