Yoiu know what is hilarious about plastic Singapore? They did not like the old Chinese part of town, full of opium dens and whatnot, so they pulled it down. Then they realiusd that they had in effect demolished the only vague semblance of historic culture on the island, so they rebuilt a replica of it. Brilliant.
They used to have this tourist pamphlet, advertising the 3 areas of Chinatown, Little India and Arab street. Look! 3 completely different cultures! Aren't we Singaporeans just the PERFECT melting pot of multiculti goodness! Yay! Well, Chinatown was rebuilt, "Little India" is just a few restaurants and loads of Indian people standing about in the street, and an alleyway full of Indian hookers, and Arab street is merely 3 shops selling carpets and other tat.
Food there is awesome. So is the posh shopping if you are into flying halfway around the world just to go to shops. Rent, when I lived there, was dirt cheap. We had a massive condo, pool, tennis, sauna, squash etc etc etc and it cost the same as the crappy student house we once had in England. Tax was also stupidly low.
However, the place has no soul. None. They can build fake chinatowns, construct artifical "resorts" like Sentosa, and try to market the place as a tourist destination, but anyone with half a brain uses Singapore for what it really is - a transport hub on the way to somewhere nice. If you are doing a few weeks living in a shed on some beach in Thailand, you might well appreciate a few days of posh air-con hotels in Singapore at one end of the trip.
But never, never move there to live.
