The SPCA has recommended more humane methods of dealing with pest rats in the home, following STOMPer Max's article on how he dealt with a rodent in his home.
In his article Max had explained how he used a commercially available glue-board to catch the pest. With regards to this method of rat disposal, however, a spokesperson for the SPCA had the following advice:
"The SPCA strongly objects to the use of glue-board traps, as they are cruel, causing unnecessary pain and suffering to the animals when they are stuck.
"We would like to thank STOMPers who have written in to say that this method is cruel.
"Ultimately, we advocate that residents take steps to prevent the animals from coming into the home - this would include keeping the area free of any food particles etc. that may attract them."
The SPCA also provided a list of alternative disposal methods, including:
1. Application of peppermint oil or other chemical deterrents.
2. Seal the possible entries.
3. Stick steel wool in mouse holes.
4. Place tubs of used kitty litter around entrances the house, or keep a cat.
5. Try a humane trap.
For goodness sake, a rat is not a pet. If SPCA says that it is cruel to use glue trap, I suggest they send their people down to catch the rat and than bring it to SPCA to feed it

Seal possible entry??? whole house = no ventilation...

I have to wonder....
..... is it considered inhumane if I were to adopt a cat from SPCA specifically for the purpose of getting it to hunt rats in my home?

Rats may be pests, not pets but they are still animals, just like your dog or my cat. I can see where SPCA is coming from.

so what will fireice and rock star do if there is a rat in their house?
hammer down the walls and holes which they are hiding in to catch them and than release them?
everytime i see an article blasting something for being cruel against animals... i will go geeezzzz.....
if u are so saint... dont eat meat... if u eat meat, u dun have any right to talk about animal cruelty.
that includes the method employed to catch those rats. any method is fine as long they are caught. period.

So are you saying just because some people in slaughterhouses are cruel to livestock, means it's OK to be cruel to animals?
Don't quite seem to understand your logic there - I am a meat eater, and if I see cruelty to animals of any kind, I will say so. Who are you to say I don't have the right to talk about animal cruelty? I'm not cruel to animals when I eat a piece of dead meat.
any method is fine as long they are caught. period.
Not if it involves torturing the animal.
There are many ways to catch/kill animals that don't involve needless torture. A glue trap causes the animal to rip its skin off and gnaw its leg off to escape. People throw them into the bin to starve to death. It's torture and it is cruelty. Why do this when you can mercifully kill the animal with little to no pain? Why does it have to be extremely painful?
To the OP: so what if it isn't a pet? It can still feel pain. Glue traps torture them and I am against them 100% ... you can use things like snap traps where death is relatively quicker and more humane. There's no need to torture any animal to death. Besides, some people keep rats as pets... they make very good pets too (the domesticated variety). Do a google search, look up YT vids on pet rats.
Just because something is classified as a pest doesn't mean it deserves to be tortured to death. I support the SPCA on this one. It's like you people didn't read their concerns - glue traps cause unnecessary pain. Animals suffer in it. Why do this? It's wrong. There are better ways to go about it, that is their point and for you to call human empathy and being kinder as "brainless" pretty much sums up your thinking ability.
that reminds me : i have witness a PRC worker disposing of rats being trapped in a cage. How he do it? He dropped the rat into a empty black trash bag, shake the trap a bit to cause the rat lose its grip on the cage. After that he a bit comical said to the rat “ä¸è¦怕" then he swing the trash bag whack onto the ground, and after that the rat dead and disposed into the bin.
Actually those are good points by SPCA.........
But it also reveals that there is a resistance and a kind of mental distance.....the humans are mentally not concerned about that......
Even in this thread we can see it also from a few posts........
So my recommendation to SPCA is....next time not only use the animal welfare logic....but also something else that is beneficial to the humans themselves....so the humans would want to do it out of their own gains and benefit........for example.....say that "peppermint oil" is cheaper , smells nicer, make the home smells nice, and is therapeutic and calming to the residents........Or say that some other alternatives is cheaper, cost less money, etc.....
This way it will bridge the mental gap and distance........by highlighting the human benefits.
I once saw someone catch 2 live rats in a cage and dunked the cage into a bucket of water...After a while, you should know what happened to the rats.
RT, they were drowned to death of course..

So u tink using a mousetrap or drowning them more cruel?

the more time needed for rat to die, the more painful it is, the more cruel.
mousetrap is instant death.
drowning need some time.

Let nature do the work and my dog or cat will kill it. Said I can see where SPCA is coming from. Which part didn't you understand?
Hmm. Maybe should use glue boards on the Woo Woo bird. Every morning at 5am these stupid crows woo woo woo woo. Cannot sleep. Maybe use the glue board to shut their beaks up. Good idea ! Eureka !
Glue Board??
Sounds like this
Mousehunt...
but think about it quite cruel, stave to death...
I don't care much for the rats, but like longline fishing, glue boards take unintended victims as well, like this stray cat (taken from Metta Cats FB):

another case of glue boards gone wrong..

When there is a dengue outbreak would this contain the situation:

When there is rodent infestation would the glue board clear the situation?
What the point of killing the rodents one by one.
