Took leave just to service my aircon that is leaking
question is is there are a need for gas top up for the aircon?
and it cost 30$ per unit.
Experts please advise if there is even the need to top up the gas in the compressor and what is the ideal gas pressure?
thanks in advance!
There should never be a need to top up refrigerant.
If it leaks, and requires top up, its the tubing that's damaged and needs replacement.
If its not replaced, you can top up every few days, weeks, months, years, and it will still leak.
I have a leaky air con. I top it up every 6 months and it's worth it compared to installing a new set.

right. that what i thought too.
damn aircon men...

why not fix the tubing?
how much is each top up?
This is what my air con guy told me:
Almost all air cons have leaks. Some with minor leaks take years to run out, some like mine take months. It's not worth even finding the leak, unless it runs out within a few weeks.
The way they locate the leak is by doing a pressure test. They pump it up, check for loss of pressure and try to find the leak. If the leak is in the inverter or room unit, it's easy to find and fix. If it's in the pipe, which travels a long distance from the inverter unit to the room unit, sometimes inside the false ceiling and sometimes inside the wall, it can be difficult.
You are right that if the leak is in the piping, changing the air con units alone won't solve the problem. You will have to fix or replace the pipes, not the unit.
In the air con business, there are all manner of crooks and untrained idiots around. Some will over charge for a small part, some will charge for "repairs" that are not even necessary. A lot of their workmanship sucks even when you install a new unit. Because of this, even if my leak was more severe, I would not change my unit.
Usually the leaks are located at the compressor unit where there are multiple fittings and joints, its usually the flare not done properly, overtightened, and damaged. Quite difficult to fix because the tubing is already the proper length, and replacing the flare would mean shortening the tube.
Rare cases are the bends where stress has set in, and a crack starts to form, which is highly unlikely, and almost impossible to locate.

main thing is use a detector to detect leaks, fix leaking area and then top up .from looks of it,they intend to top up like 3 times and then ask u if u need to fix back leaky joints.thats like over 6 months just to grab $100 or less.
but if the air con was last topped up years ago....then its ok to top up the aircon gas.as long as iut last a few years more for $30 top up aircon gas.if there was a leak, then in 6 months or less it wont get cold aircon and u need more $$$$$ to fix back leaks.
topping up aircon gas yearly or so is considered cheaper than replacing an aircon o-ring from unions n joints or cracks somewhere along the line which requires dismantling of pipelines and walls if its placed in ductings etc.
so hope the aircon gas top up can last a few years after topping up.if not then a more expensive fix is required.
perhaps its not in the leak but rather the initial gas top up from years ago which was done incorrectly as insufficient vacumm pressurising was done in the aircon lines as by the book.this would lead to poor cooling performance over time.

time to get other aircon folks to ask them to fix leaky aircon and solve problem.
id u calculate properly...its much more economically to replace leaky joints than to keep topping them up.
just get quotation over phone from other aircon companies b4 asking them to come to fix it.

Ahhhh, nothing like the corrosiveness of salt filled air.

i nvr knew salt can evaporate
Which aircon are you'll talking about? car or home?

You are right, but ionized salt can. ![]()
A goold reason why air conditioning units near the shore usually have their metal treated to withstand sea breezes.

You can say some aircon companies are irresponsible but not all as those are just black sheeps in the herd.
whats the market price for topping up gas?
Market price to top up gas is only $10 per unit leh
So do you normally ask the technician to come your home and top up for just one unit only?

transport $50
Unless you know about aircon, you will most like kena cheated by the technicians.
Once you call them there will always be problems real and invented.
If your aircon has all the gas in there, and they say there is no gas, and need top up, what can you do? You say no, they sabo you and leave you aircon faulty. You top up, you are doing the unnecessary.
You are at their mercy.
