I thk its one of the major topics for grads from JC/Poly as they face yet another turning pt in their life. most youngsters will have to face it(for e.g. Me. ) and got really puzzled which way would be best? work n have money to spend or study n spent money on education(+ some bank loans too) ;S
the issue is more like uni deg vs money......
without tertiary education you are unlikely to get jobs with good/related exp. Unless your family owns a company, otherwise, with A level you are only limited to those lower level jobs.
I suggest study more first, unless ur family financial condition is really very poor...
Alternatively do part time studies..........
yea. more realistically uni deg vs money. but nowadays its tough for uni grad with no work exp to get jobs as well.. for diploma holders thay can slowly work their way up but theirs a limit to what position they can achieve i guess..cause they are only diploma holders. compared to others who might have a degree , masters , PHD etc..
Start a bussiness if you dont wanna end up in a rat race like everyone else

that is more like a myth than truth....
Class of 2011 SMU report: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1188500/1/.html
-top 20% average pay S$5,039
-average at $3500
-Overall, 95.6 per cent of SMU graduates found jobs
-6 in 10 graduates had job offers even before they graduated
-62 per cent of them had multiple job offers
But it really depends on what course u take, some are really marketable, some are not
$5000. Is not alot.
SMU losers! They're still in the rat race!
We work for money! How bout money to work for you??
Im gonna start my own business!
i thk part time study is a good alternative for ppl who need to support themselves . However , not everyone is capable of juggling between a full time job and a part time study i thk..it takes up most of your time and energy..although it might help u save some years to be used in pursuing a full time degree..But i thk it depends on which uni/college ur taking par time studies in..private colleges / uni curriculum would be more relax compared to public uni like nus/ntu which requires 5 years to complete a part time deg! n it cost even more than its full time degree fee....actually,i wonder what is the difference of holding a degree from private college/uni and a degree from public uni in sg. the duration iso much different!

what makes u think SMU grads won't start their own business?
what makes u think their pay remain at $5000? Those top 20% are potentially directors of big firms with multi-million salary. These directors owned several businesses and investment too. Where do u think their multi-million goes? in bank earn low interest?
Do u know Havard Uni breeds the best entrepreneur?
You need to have good knowledge of business before u can actually start a good business. Of cuz, there are some exceptional case.
How can you start a business without capital? The TS can't even pay for the uni fees without taking a loan.
Sorry if I sound rude, but u just insulted many SMU grads
Im talking about the exceptional ones. And not all SMU grads become directors. Again an exceptional case. You dont have to graduate from Harvard or any equivalent good business schools, not refering to SMU* ofcourse to be successful. If its in your blood, all you gotta do is work it! Capital wise, there are many ways to raise the funds! Microloans and many others. You just have to be good at what you sell!
To gain access Havard Business School MBA programme, you need to have a good degree too. Havard recognises SMU.
Even if you are not exceptionally talented uni grads, you earn a decent income too. With a few years exp, 7k-8k salary is easy. A level holder salary are stagnant, with little career path. And if ur business failed, u have a back-up route too....
If u compare entrepreneur with good degree vs entrepreneur with little education, you will notice the failure rate of those with little education is way way higher. They simply lack knowledge, experience and capital
What are the probablities of a good degree holder becoming a millionaire vs one with little education.
To have mircoloan or angel investor, u need to have a business that is on going with good prospect. Are u aware of the application and approval rate? Do u know the education background of the owners are being scrutinized too.

For private uni, I think SIM or PSB is the best.....
i believe the ultimate goal of most ppl would be to be their own boss . but it wont mean a thing if it only lasts for few month or few years..thats my opinion. so i thk building a solid foundation before starting ur own business is vital in singapore. the competition is just too strong!
what are the major difference of a degree cert from private n public uni?? since private uni course duration is so much shorter so probably the fees might be lower as well.. i heard private uni deg are recognized as well..

In singapore, our public uni is more recognized than private uni...
maybe visit this: http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/degree-programs-courses-70/ntu-smu-nus-vs-sim-uol-private-degrees-3583575-3.html
yea..i know but ppl who graduated from private uni (some) still get the same pay as public uni grads as well...

Go confirm if the so called 'private uni' is refering to singapore ones. Some claimed to graduate from private uni but are actually refering to Havard or Yale those type of private uni.
As far as I know, the average SIM fresh pay is slighty around $2500. I know many with $3000+ jobs esp if they work in banks; banks tend pay a premium.
If u compare average pay(same course) of SMU vs SIM, I have no doubt that SIM pay is lower.
Like i said, if you really wanna start a business, no matter what your obstacles are, you will do whatever it takes just to raise the capital. Also, you must be Excellent! Dont have to revere business graduates so much! Ofcourse, if you have Harvard or an equivalent degree it'll boost your business knowledge. Say, you start your business and it becomes successful, the uneducated employer can always employ an educated employee eg. With a harvard degree to work for him. Im saying that a degree isnt the only avenue for success. Look further!
I fully agree. I just didn't like the fact that u label SMU grads as losers.
Ok, SMU grads are not losers. Peace.
Get that degree..
Tell yourself every morning and every night, "I'll get that degree".
When you have that degree, you'll have a higher paying job. Notice that I used 'higher' and not 'high'?
You will get a higher-paying job but not a high-paying job.
'Higher' is a comparative whilst 'high' is an adjective.
Higher-paying: few hundred dollars more/ month
high-paying: more few thousand dollars n above/ month
At the end of the day, it's not what you know, it's who you know. Always remember the words in bold. ![]()
