NTUC investigates staff's alleged inappropriate Facebook post
Posted: 08 October 2012 1006 hrs
The labour movement is investigating an inappropriate comment allegedly made by one of its staff recently.
In
a post on its Facebook page on Monday, NTUC Membership said it was
alerted of this and will have a report on its investigations in due
course.
It said this is a serious concern and will be addressed shortly.
It
stressed that the labour movement centres on inclusivity and will not
accept words or action of any of its staff that are insensitive or
offending to any community.
NTUC, or National Trades Union
Congress, said this in response to a Facebook post made by an assistant
director in the membership department, Ms Amy Cheong, about weddings at
void decks. She made the comment on her own Facebook page.
Ms Cheong later posted another comment, apologising for what she described as a "silly comment".
She said it was a "bad judgement" which she truly regretted and added it was in no way a reflection of NTUC and its work.

NTUC sacks employee for inappropriate Facebook comments

The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) has sacked an employee who posted offensive comments on her personal Facebook page.
It
terminated, with immediate effect, the services of Ms Amy Cheong, the
assistant director of the membership department, after establishing with
her that she did post the offensive comments on 7 October.
Secretary-General Lim Swee Say said in a statement on Monday that the NTUC takes a serious view on racial harmony in Singapore.
He
said the NTUC will not accept and has zero tolerance towards any words
used or actions taken by its staff that are racially offensive.
Mr Lim said regrettably and rightly so, her comments have upset members of the public, including many union members.
Mr Lim, who is also Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, said the labour movement is sorry this happened.
NTUC has counselled Ms Cheong and impressed upon her the seriousness of her action.
Mr Lim said she is remorseful and has apologised for her grave lapse of judgement.
He stressed that inclusiveness remains at the heart of the labour movement.
The labour movement investigated the comments after it was alerted of Ms Cheong's post about Malay weddings at void decks.
Ms Cheong later posted another comment, apologising for what she described as a "silly comment".
She said it was a "bad judgement" which she truly regretted and added it was in no way a reflection of NTUC and its work.

NTUC staff fired for insensitive comments made on Facebook
SINGAPORE - The National Trades Union Congress has terminated the services of an Assistant Director in its Membership Department, following inappropriate comments allegedly made on her Facebook page.
"The NTUC takes a serious view on racial harmony in Singapore. We will not accept and have zero tolerance towards any words used or actions taken by our staff that are racially offensive," said Mr Lim Swee Say, Secretary-General of NTUC in a statement.
"NTUC has terminated with immediate effect the services of Ms Amy Cheong, Assistant Director, Membership Department after establishing with her that she did post offensive comments on her personal Facebook page on Oct 7.
"Regrettably and rightly so, her comments have upset members of the public, including many union members. We are sorry that this has happened. We have counselled the staff and impressed upon her the seriousness of her action. She is remorseful and has apologised for her grave lapse of judgement."
In a post on the NTUC Membership Facebook page early this morning, NTUC said it had been alerted of the post made by Ms Cheong, on her Facebook page, concerning weddings at void decks.
"This matter is being investigated and we will have a report in due course. This is a serious concern to all of us and will be addressed shortly," said NTUC Membership said in its post.
"The Labour Movement centres on inclusivity and we will not accept words or action of any of our staff that is insensitive or offending to any community."
Ms Cheong later posted a comment on her Facebook page - which has since been taken down - apologising for what she described as a "silly comment".
"It was my own bad judgment which I truly regret," she wrote. "I was just upset with the noise. I truly do not mean to be judgmental or critical. I am truly sorry."
She has no right to be an AD if she obviously cannot see the consequences of her actions before she post...
Besides, void deck $50 dollar wedding??? Come on, she's from which era? Is she so elite that she dun even know the agar agar price??? even our Kee chiu's $1.50 or $10 cai tao kway actually sounds MUCH better than her comment >__>
It's more than just ONE comment, by the way.
And no offence, but I can't help but notice that her status is 'It's Complicated'.....

She literally cursed that Malay wedding couple to death.
And her public profile clearly states that her relationship is 'It's Complicated'.
I just can't help but notice the irony.

A person convicted under the Sedition Act could be fined up to S$5,000 and jailed up to 3 years.
Next..... The Men in BLUE will be at her doorsteps.
Police said the right to free speech does not extend to making remarks that incite racial and religious conflict.
The public should also refrain from re-posting and adding on to comments that may inflame the situation.
The commander of Bedok Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police How Kwang Hwee, said: "The Internet may be a convenient medium to express one's views but members of the public should bear in mind that they are no less accountable for their actions online."
"Police take a very stern view of acts that could threaten the social harmony in Singapore."
