Making their appearance in eMarts from August onwards, two new models of Asics running shoes will hit the shelves as part of the SAF's latest efforts to provide servicemen with the latest shoe technologies. The two models are Gel Kanbarra 4 SP (for the neutral to high arch foot type) and Gel 105 SP (for the neutral to mild flat foot type). Servicemen with neutral foot type can choose from either models.
Introduced by HQ 9 Div/Infantry and HQ Supply, these new running shoes have been issued to all BMTC recruits at their intake equipping starting from June 2011. This initiative is also assisted by defence partners DSTA and Singapore Technologies (Logistics).
Visibly pleased with the new shoes, REC Mohammad Alfaiz, Bravo Company, BMTC commented, "On the whole, the shoe is considerably lighter and more comfortable. As this is also a well-known brand for running shoes, I am happy to get them as my training shoes."
To ensure that the right shoes are issued to our servicemen, the project team engaged Grace Heng, Head Physiotherapist, HQ Army Medical Services (HQ AMS) to incorporate the sport science expert perspective in the selection of these shoes.
"Running is one of the core activities in our Army. To prevent running injuries, one must not only train well, but also be equipped with the right gear. These newly selected SAF running shoes will cater to a wide range of foot types; adequate heel control and arch support shoes for mild flat feet or well-cushioned shoes for high arch feet. The shoes are available in 2E and 4E. With the right selection, you will be able to enjoy your next runs." commented Grace Heng Lek Thian, Head Physiotherapist, HQ AMS.
To ensure the quality of the shoes commensurate with the physical activities undertaken by our servicemen, many user trials were conducted by the Army Personal Equipment Expert Team of Warrant Officers beforehand to ensure good fit and performance.
Said MWO Neo Chee Wee, School Sergeant Major, BMTC School 1, who was one of the pioneer users of the new Gel Kanbarra 4 SP, "I have been running with the Asics Gel Kanbarra for the past 5 months. The new Asics running shoes are very much lighter than the previous models from New Balance or Brooks. The Gel ® Cushioning System at the heels absorbs the shock effectively during impact. As a soldier, running is part of my daily activities in Tekong, so a durable product is very important. In addition, it has a very cool and stylish design."
