WORRIED tenants told The Straits Times that Wednesday's late night ceiling collapse has added to fears that fewer shoppers will patron Jem mall in Jurong East following the latest addition to the mall's string of mishaps.
"I am concerned about business in the future because people will think twice about coming to Jem.. who knows (when) another mishap may happen," said Earle Swensen's restaurant manager Sazali Jaafar, 45.
A large portion of the ceiling - believed to be about 50m long - on the first level of the mall fell to the ground just after 10pm, followed by a gush of water from what is understood to be a burst water pipe.
Three individuals sustained minor injuries and were conveyed to National University Hospital, a Singapore Civil Defence spokesperson said.
Starbucks shift supervisor Mohamed Ibrahim Bin Mohamed Taib, 29, was present when the ceiling collapsed.
"There was water rushing out from the pipes and all the wiring was on the floor. I was quite shocked," said Mr Ibrahim. Customers and staff were immediately and safely evacuated from the building, he added.
Like Mr Sazali, Mr Ibrahim too is worried about the footfall to the mall following the recent spate of accidents.
"Eventually people will be scared to come to Jem because of this incident happening," said Mr Ibrahim.
Last month, thousands of shoppers at Jem had to be evacuated after a car caught fire in the basement carpark.
Earlier in the same week, three employees manning the ready-to-eat counter at the mall's NTUC FairPrice Xtra store suffered minor burns when a deep fryer caught fire.

The boss of the development firm behind the Jem mall yesterday promised that it would reopen only when there is "no risk" of incidents like a burst pipe occurring again.
It came as a team of experts flew in from Australia to assess damage at the beleaguered shopping centre - which is even considering hiring a fengshui master to revive its flagging fortunes.
Mr Steve McCann, group chief executive officer of Australian firm Land Lease, also refuted an accusation from MP Ang Wei Neng that his company may have taken short cuts in a rush to finish the mall, which was eventually opened four days late in June.
Calling the MP's comment "unfortunate", Mr McCann told The Straits Times in an exclusive interview: "We certainly do not put revenue ahead of safety."

The Jurong East Jem mall will reopen on Wednesday, exactly two weeks after a false ceiling collapsed on its first floor.
The mall's management made the announcement on their Facebook page on Monday morning and tenants told The Straits Times that they have been told of the reopening date.
The collapsed ceiling, which injured three people last Wednesday, was caused by a burst water pipe. The mall's developer Lend Lease chose to close the mall the following day to do a thorough check.
Tenants at Jem mall were eager to get back to business even before the official opening time at 10am this morning.
Some tenants including supermarket FairPrice and coffee chain Starbucks were already in the full-swing of business.
The mall reopened on Wednesday, exactly two weeks after a false ceiling on its first floor collapsed,
Other tenants including departmental store Robinsons, clothing store Fossil, and restaurants Marche and Kuriya were busying themselves getting ready to open. Tenants were seen cleaning glass panes and starting on food prep.

Jem's B2 and B3 carpark only

A glass door at Jurong East's Jem mall shattered on Friday night - the latest in a string of incidents to befall the shopping mall.
Located on the first floor next to clothing retailer H&M, a third of the glass partition shattered into smaller pieces. The mall's spokesman said no one was hurt, and that the glass has since been cleaned up and the area cordoned off.
Since its June opening, the mall has had a few hiccups. Its opening was delayed by four days due to a lack of fire permits. On Aug 14, three FairPrice staff were hurt after a deep fryer caught fire. Four days later, a car burst into flames in the mall's carpark.
On Sep 18, a burst water pipe caused a ceiling to collapse. Three people suffered bruises and the mall shut the next day for safety checks and repairs to be carried out. It reopened on Oct 2.
