Hi guys,
I would like to know the cost of living in Singapore for a student. I'm frm India and I plan on going to Singapore for my PGD course but I'm not quite sure about the living expenses.
I was told by some of my friends that 800-1000S$/month is sufficient for a student.
Can someone help me out with the monthly expenses in Singapore?
Thanks in advance. :)
If share a room 800-1000$ is fair enough la. The rental fee is almose 800 per room. Living cost about 500 if you dont shopping a lot![]()
1000$ shld be enough lar if u r not very loose..
1000 per month means stale biscuits everyday, public transport everyday.
Let me do calculation.
Lowest possible rent: $600/month
You have $400 left to spend.
An average 1 way bus trip cost $2.50. You stilll need to take the bus at least twice a day. 5x30, you have $150 gone.
You are left with $250.
Not forgetting school items [like pens] which needs money out of your pocket, average at around $30/month.
You are left with $220.
Most landlords won't let people who rent their rooms cook. You need to eat out. If you spend $2 on a meal, 3 meals a day. $6/day. 6x30, adding up to $180.
Remember, you cannot even spend a few cents more on each meal, or for example [$2.50x3]x30= $225. You will go over the budget.
You are left with $40.
What are you going to do with that $40? When a foriegner falls sick in Singapore, a trip to the doctor can rake up to $50, a specialist $80+++

How to survive on $3.20 an hour? ![]()
To make 1000$ possible, of coz hv to share the room lar, that way it will cost u like 350$ a month... Student should be able to get used to it since u r not earning money yet.. Then u hv 650$ left, avg food will take u 12$ a day, 12$ shld be enough as school cantee is sort of cheap.. Hence food take u 360$ a month. With 290$ left, it is enough for phone bill and transport and occasional expense on clothes...hope this explains. Nonetheless, it is a lot depending on your way of life.. Money is nvr enough...
Hey guys...Thank you all very much for your inputs ![]()
Summer hill and Avatarniu-Thanks for breaking it down for me ![]()
I guess I need to get used to the student lifestyle and cut down on some unwwanted expenses..I could go slighly more that 1000$ if it really required but I'll try to remain well within the budget..

Yes, which meant no shopping, no partying, no going out and no luxuries.

Yea, that kinda' sucks when you're a student-very limited budget, might be a bit tough for me initially but I guess I have no other option...
Your other option is not living here.

OK...I'm a bit scared now after seeing ditzy and Tehjarvu's comment..
Is Singapore really that bad place to live as a student??
Local students, no.

$500.
3 meals everyday. Cheapest meal I can get in S'pore is a $2 chicken rice. $2x3=$6
$6x30=$180
Transport. Average 1 way(bus) cost $2.50. $2.50x2 =$5
$5x30=$150
$500-$180-$150=$170
Not forgetting school items [like pens] which needs money out of your pocket, average at around $30/month.
$170-$30=$140
It should be enough, just pray that you wounldn't fall sick

SINGAPORE is now the sixth most expensive city to live in, a survey by the business intelligence arm of the Economist magazine shows.
Singapore moved up three places from last year's ninth position to rank behind Melbourne, Oslo, Sydney, Osaka and Tokyo as the most expensive cities in the world.
It is also the third most expensive Asian city to live in, outside of the Japanese cities of Osaka and Tokyo.
The survey used New York as the base and measured the cost of 50,000 individual prices of items.

You are not considered a "student" here. You are consider an adult.
Unless you are a Singapore student in primary school, secondary school or JC, you cannot expect to enjoy student privileges.

You all from edmw is it? ![]()
I am from Turkey.
Course price collapsed meal. I mean, Singaporean family will give me a meal 2 times a day. Weekends 3 times.
I know Durian. Really? Singaporeans like it? But it is forbidden in hotels, buses, taxies or mrt. But in home, you really like it? Because i like it too. However i don't know belachan.
rental here is about S$700 and expenses up to $500 or more.
If you are from rich family, no problem for u.
In Singapore, almost everything is money.
If you can, go other country for study.

Is Chili1200 your clone?
You are not even honest about using your nick to post how you expect people to take you seriously?>>??
Noone is my clone. I am not fake member.
I know Singapore is small and maybe you can get bored. But not for me. Homestay fee included in total bill. Books etc. too. So no need to think about this issue. Except these things, 500 SGD is enough i think, right?
And i wanna learn Singaporean lifestyle. Because i choosed homestay with Singaporean family. How should i behave to them? I want to learn your culture sir. (:
We are a country with no distinct identity or culture, but we know who we are.
