The makers of instant messaging app, MessageMe, said on Tuesday that an SMS making its rounds, including here in Singapore, warning users that it is sending out a "spam virus", is a hoax.
The US-based company issued a statement on its Facebook page saying that a text message suggesting that it is sending out spam SMS invites with the intent to compromise user data is "entire untrue".
On Monday, local technology forums and social media platforms were abuzz about the hoax message, which also claimed that clicking on the link from invites sent directly MessageMe will cause a user to send out SMS invites to all their contacts, depleting their SMS quotas.
"Your privacy is of utmost importance," the company said. "Any texts you receive to join MessageMe will be from one of your personal contacts, that has specifically sent you an invitation," it said, apologising for any confusion.
