paid/free tv channels in addition to local tv channels?

hello everyone -
for someone who doesn't watch tv and is a complete technology illiterate, i need advice from all you tv-watching experts out there:)
so besides the common local tv channels that everyone gets broadcasted to their homes, from where/whom can i get/subscribe to additional channels (paid or free) such as sports channel, cartoon channel, movie channel etc? and do i need to do anything to my existing tv?

I think you can do this...change your tv to a smart tv....connect it to your computer then from there you can get additional channels from the internet...free.. -
