aiyoh...since when has your drinking habit influenced by scholars or government? how did your parents bring you up?
when I was young I drank straight from the tap, with my two palms held together, very often my palms were more dirty than the water.
Now I drink tap water without boiling, except I don't use palms but water bottles that allow me to carry to my office or anywhere I like.
When I was working in Jurong, the tap water came out a little hazy, but turned clear after settled for a while. So we drank boiled water, to have a peace of mind, then later from bottled water, company paid.
now I drink milk, got stomach trouble, boiled milk, ok, so I drink boiled milk.
Its up to you, if your stomach can take tap water, more convenient and save electricity. Got money buy Amway water filters which were made for countries where water came out brown in color, or any other branded filters, give you a peace of mind, nothing else, or prestige? neh...
My mother said, in Hokkien, "la sap jia, la sap drua", in english, dirty eat, dirty grow.
Don't let scholars tell you to drink directly from tap, or any other nuts telling you boil water before you drink.
I think better boil before use!
it is indeed safe. at least much much better than waters on other countries.
I guess its just a peace of mind we have when we boil the water.
can consider cloth filter
Two sides of an argument:-
I've been drinking tap water for my whole life, yet to know of any negative symptoms showing.
On the other hand, our water is fluoridated and chlorinated, there are claims that they may be carcinogenic if done to excess. We did not know when symptoms will show until much later. The quality of our treated is very good compared to other areas.
For those who kept exotic aquaria will attest, especially those who keep soft water type of fishes, will age water for a day or so before adding to the tank. We are definitely more tolerant to the water quality, but this will provide food for thought.
Unless we have drunk from water straight from source of mountain stream, we would know the quality of sweetness's, softness, deliciousness and smoothness of spring water. Then, one may, note that I say "may", experience the difference from tap water. Cooled boiled water tasted slightly smoother, less "sour", for want for a better word, easier on the throat, but for most the time, we are too busy and distracted to notice the difference.
And for your information, most bottled or "mineral" water, is actually bottled tap water. Any water when settled long enough will lose most of the the dissolved gases.

Most milk is homogenized so the milk fats will not separate, making milk taste creamier and smoother. It may come at the cost of making milk less digestible.
Ever seen the oil floating on laksa? It comes from the coconut milk, so, perhaps boiling makes milk fat easier to separate within your stomach.

It's because of all the hormones in your milk which cows from hormone injections given to cow.
As for water, chlorine is too high in the water. This causes kidney problems ,no wonder dialysis centers cropping up all over.Boiling cannot help with it,good filter, probably.
Since about 10 years old, I've always drunk from the tap, no problems for me..
it better to boil! the water has to travel a long long distance in order to reach your home and who know what is in the pipe!

By the time you see problems, too late already.
Boiling wouldn't help if there is rust in the water... boiling kills bacteria and doesn't take out the rust.
Old Chinese traditions are very stubborn, not matter what scientific facts there are to prove them otherwise. Tap water is safe to drink! The only benefit of boiling the water is that you take all of the air bubbles out. Makes for very clear ice.
I dont think the water supply pipes are made of iron. rust is perhaps the least to worry.
of course tap water in Singapore cannot kill you.
It's simply not the most healthiest to drink straight from the tap.
