The almightly firewall

  its important to get a firewall, coz due to e horrendously buggy framework of windows, once an exploit is discovered, its easy for a 'script-kiddie' to force an open port on your comp and send command(s) to screw it up, not to mention e ICMP packets(nuking) and stuff.
  
  some ppl take it a step further and get both hardware and software firewall, i onli use software though, no $$.
  
  eh..i dun like the norton firewall, v de 'da jing xiao guai' wan. and not all so called 'intrusions' are realli intrusions, mostly is juz 'internet chatter', u noe, pings and such.
  
  Firewalls i recommend:
  1. Kerio
  2. Sygate
  3. Zonealarm
  4. Tiny
  
  i think for ppl who have lower-end comps, sygate will work betta coz it consumes less system resources. basically, its not a one-size-fits-all thing, u juz gotta try some and see which works best for you.

  if you ppl are so worried abt viruses, switch to Unix OS and stop using microsoft.
  
  Even Mac OS is fantastic and relatively virus free....wait make that completely virus free!
  
  Virus creaters just hate microsoft and bill gates...

  Blackice has it's flaws due to its AI management, (use the leaktest and see)
  
  Best so far is Zonealarm, troublesome to configure but once its done right nothing gets out without at least alerting u first.

  unix and mac are not virus free, its juz e structure makes any malicious commands useless, coz u're completely safe unless u work in ROOT. u may think that who in e world is dumb enuff to work in ROOT...but hey, e extent of human stupidity never ceases to amaze me.
  
  btw. its not that virus writers hate microsoft, its just that, if you want to infect the max no. of dumb PC users around the world, e OS to naturally target is windows. correct???

  unix is virus proof. they dun make virus for unix becus it doesn't matter if you infect the whole system it's very difficult to crash a unix box using virus.
  
  However you can crash a unix box if you install a faulty device that somehow corrupts the kernel memory, or run a program that eats up all system resources then it stalls.

  iptables + application level gateway (proxy) + antivirus + patch management + OS hardening = > 75% assurance IMHO
  
  use *nix. Everything's free.......
