SINGAPORE : Singapore's media industry is undergoing a major shake up.
The island's largest broadcaster MediaCorp and main-board listed Singapore Press Holdings will merge their mass-market television and free newspaper operations - in a move to stem losses and improve shareholder value.

On Friday afternoon, top management from the two media giants signed agreements for SPH to buy a 20 percent stake in a new television company to be called MediaCorp TV Holdings.
MediaCorp will manage this new company and own the remaining 80 percent.
SPH will also buy a 40 percent stake in MediaCorp Press, which publishes TODAY.
TODAY will continue to be managed by MediaCorp - and will operate independently of the stable of newspapers under SPH.
The deals - were struck on a "willing buyer, willing seller" basis - and should receive formal regulatory approval by year's end.
Since Singapore's media liberalisation in May 2000, both SPH and MediaCorp have incurred losses - after their respective forays into each other's businesses proved unprofitable.
SPH will pay S$10 million for their 20 percent stake in the new TV company MediaCorp TV Holdings.
The new company will comprise MediaCorp's Channels 5 and 8 and TV Mobile - as well as SPH MediaWorks' Channel U and I.
The new television company will also include MediaCorp Studios - which produces the bulk of MediaCorp's local programming.
Channel U will continue to operate but Channel I's commercial viability has to be reviewed.
On the newspaper side, MediaCorp will sell a 40 percent stake in MediaCorp Press, which publishes TODAY, to rival SPH for more than S$19 million.
Once the deal is completed, SPH will merge its own free newspaper Streats with TODAY.
TODAY will continue to be managed by MediaCorp, and will operate independently of the stable of newspapers under SPH.
The rest of MediaCorp's businesses, which are largely profitable are unaffected by this merger.
Besides Channel NewsAsia, these include radio and the other television businesses of Suria and Central as well as its film production arm MediaCorp Raintree Pictures.
The mergers will affect staff on both sides.
A staff rationalisation exercise will be overseen by a Manpower Synergy Task Force.
It will comprise an independent director from MediaCorp's board and senior HR managers from the two media companies. - CNA

There have already been talks of the merger way back in 2002 when they announced that the competition does not help the industry here...making losses, making both stations look back..etc..
It's so funny to see artistes from mediacorp jumping over to ch U, and vice versa, hoping to have a breakthrough or sumthing, in the end, still end up under same big boss.
The most stoopid is the ratings war, using 2 diff ratings companies somemore, like that how to noe which one is real? Think we stoopid ah?
And the most funnie part is the people who jumped over from channel 8 to channel u, most of them are "has-beens": Ix shen, Chen Chuan-Zhi..etc..
If you're lousy, go anywhere will be lousy, besides, unless u suck up to the Honkie-Lackie Mun Shu S*m, like what Bryan, Quan Yi Feng..etc, you will nvr make it in Ch U. Btw, Quan Yi Feng make enemies in mediacopr, due to her brashness, dats why no choice have to jump to Ch U. Still nvr change... -

Branding-wise, Channel U and I has more emotional attachment to it. While the Branding for Ch 5 & 8 has been more to the corporate side, Channel U and I has made itself unique on it's own. Depite the fact that they (I & U) may not have the capacity to air Blockbusters and a pool of experience artistes onboard. Personally, I'm more attached to Channel and U cos the imgage and content relates to me. It's fun, young and energetic
At the end of the day, it's about money and unfortunately it walked over the Passion and Desire to compete against MC and being able to stand on it's own, bringing forth it's own uniqueness of progs to the rest of us.
As they say, it was good while it last.
