According to Singapore Law, there is only one basis for divorce - that the marriage has broken down irretrivably.
(section 88(3) of the Women's Charter)
To establish this, one of five "facts" has to be proven.
1. Adultery
Meaning: ...where the court deems that an opportunity is present for a sexual relationship with the opposite sex (other than the spouse) to take place.
2. Unreasonable Behaviour
Meaning: ...physical abuse, alcohol abuse, excessive gambling (nagging not counted)
3. Desertion for 2 years
Meaning: ...where absolutely no news has been heard from the spouse (even after placing ads in papers)
4. 3 Years Separation With Mutual Consent
Meaning: ...where no conjugal relationship exists (separate lifestyles)
5. 4 Years Separation
If the irretrievable breakdown is established, the court will order a "Decree Nisi".
This is also a period where the court hopes that things can still be worked out between both parties. The Singapore Court is family-oriented.
After custody of children, maintenance and other ancillary matters, such as distribution of matrimonial assets, are dealt with, a final order called a "Decree Absolute" will be made.
Once it is declared, the marriage is considered void, and the divorce proceedings are complete.
But do take note: A marriage is a solemn and sacred event. Do not get registered for marriage for the wrong reasons. In the eyes of the Singapore Law, you are considered a "couple" when you signed your names at the ROM, not when you hold your wedding banquet or 'jin cha' to your parents.
============
Sad Fact : The divorce rate in Singapore hit 40% once.

You would definitely require a LAWYER... The 'department' in charge is the FAMILY COURT... The total cost can VARIES quite ALOT... Depending on the lawyer you hire, whether there're asset involved and how fast you finish the case...Originally posted by trouper:do anybody knows how the process to divorce ?
Is only lawer require for the paper work ? or is there a dept for it in singapore? what is the total cost like?
Don't blame everything on yourself...? Bet it on the society... Or the DEVIL....? Hmm... Or maybe you can even blame it on your spouse...?Originally posted by Si|verGer:but dat has been an increase in e rate of divorce...
n e alarming new is dat most of the cases r couples dat r below 30yr old or being married less than 5yrs..

One more question here :
Guys : If marriage entails so much trouble and hassle, would you resort to cohabiting instead of marriage?
(forget the moral issue, hope to hear your true opinion)
Girls : Would you agree to the above preposition?
