What's new?Originally posted by hmsg:and LTA claimed the blame lays with others....
It's too bad what happened to the cyclist, but it would not have happened if he had gotten off his bike and pushed it like he was supposed to.Originally posted by dsnake1:wtf the LTA put that stupid thing in the middle of the bridge? What are they thinking? Obviously not safety. Or they really hate cyclists.
Now a man, a father of 2, is paralysed after hitting it.
Many cyclists use this bridge to get from Tampines to Pasir Ris across the expresway. Putting that stupid thing up is just waiting for an accident to happen. wtf.![]()

That's why that "stupid thing" is there. Too many people have been cycling on the bridge making it dangerous for those walking on it.
There have been signs and public messages in the past which these cyclist will ignore. Now the LTA is left without a choice but to put these barriers up and someone still wants to cycle there and gets hurt? I for one do not like almost all the stupid polices and laws there are here, but sometimes you also need to look carefully at who's to blame.
POOL OF BLOODOriginally posted by hisoka:erm warning sign not needed bah got bar down there you see you will know its dangerous or not like it moves or something, while i piuty the person and his family i cannot really say its the agency's fualt
RED-AND-WHITE TAPEOriginally posted by silv3rgal:I thought the barrier there is pretty obvious..shouldn't cyclist just slow down a bit to get thru? Shouldn't completely blame the authorities... how abt pedestrians using the bridge? If they get knocked down my fast moving cyclists....who to blame?

yup right, always blame others and not yourself.![]()

[b]DEADLY BARRIERS
Cyclist didn't see them in dark
Wife fears he may be paralysed

The New Paper
16 July 2005
THE metal barriers were supposed to make the overhead bridge safer - by forcing cyclists to dismount and push their bicycles.
They were installed only on one side of the bridge near Block 495F Tampines Street 43 on Tuesday evening.
The next morning, a cyclist coming from the other side of the bridge smashed into them.
Badly injured, he is now in intensive care and there are fears that he may be permanently paralysed from his neck down.
The 40-year-old man was on his way to a temple. He would do so every day at about 6.30am.
The father of two young children would coast down the ramp on his bicycle. But that morning, his ride came to an abrupt end.
He reportedly didn't see the inverted U-shape metal frames until it was too late. He rammed straight into them and landed heavily on the ground.
Blood flowed from his head and seeped into the cement ground.
He was not able to get up as he had damaged his spinal cord.
A kind stranger called for the ambulance.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force confirmed that it received a call at 6.53am and arrived at the scene three minutes later.
The man was taken to a hospital and admitted into the intensive care ward.
His wife was too distraught over his critical condition to talk.
She requested that he not be named.
'We're already facing a lot of pain and pressure. We don't want people to keep coming to us.
'The doctor says he has to be determined in his own mind (to walk again), so I don't want him to know too much about his condition,' she said wearily.

[b]RED-AND-WHITE TAPE
A civic-minded resident spent $5 on red-and-white plastic tape, which he used to tie on the barriers so that cyclists would better see them.
In the one hour that The New Paper was at the bridge on Wednesday morning, over a dozen cyclists rode past.
All of them criticised the barriers, saying they should have been built farther away from the sloped ramp of the bridge so that cyclists would find it easier to stop on level ground.
Ms Chris Chan, 34, a hairdresser, said she almost hit the barriers as they were being put in at about 8pm on Tuesday.
'There were no lights. Luckily, I saw the workers in time.'

a speed barrier could be better design.Originally posted by Bloop...:The point is? I know what happened. I know the condition he is in. I do feel sorry for him and his family.
That still does not change the fact that he was cycling on the bridge when he was not supposed to.
He admits (or someone did on his behalf) that he has been cycling on that bridge for quite sometime.
I use that bridge myself regularly and have been hit by a cyclist more than once. But as long as its was the pedestrian on foot that got hurt and not the cyclist, they keep on cycling on the bridge.
It has been made known from way back that they are to get off their bicycles and push it across. Do they care? No, they don't. As long as they feel they can get away with it, regardless of how they put others at risk/inconvenience, they'll keep doing it.
How fast was this guy going that he could get that badly hurt? What if he had hit someone instead of that barrier?
I agree the design could be better, but then again... designs could always be better.Originally posted by crazy monkey:a speed barrier could be better design.
ya right the cyclist is suppose to push the bicycle across the brigde.
but when its 6:30 am in the morning when he could be the only person using the bridge, that would be the smartest thing he would do.
i wonder if there is any predestrian who has not cross a junction when the light is red on a dessert juction in his life.
i am not a cyclist btw.
tell me you never jaywalk in your life.Originally posted by Bloop...:I agree the design could be better, but then again... designs cold always be better.
I think the fact that it's 6.30 in the morning doesn't mean he can cycle on the bridge. Cause if that's the case, then what? Is 7am ok? 8am? 9?
Or you're saying it's because there's no one on the bridge? What if there was one person? Two? Three? What's the limit before they get off their bikes? Do you think a person who pushes rules won't keep pushing as long and as far as they can?
Can we drive on the sidewalk it it's 6.30 am and there is no one there?
Yes I have. I've ran across roads that I'm not supposed to. I've tripped and fell across a chain barrier at the Tampines mall too because of that. I don't blame the LTA for that chain being there.Originally posted by crazy monkey:tell me you never jaywalk in your life.
