Actually 2% increase is more than 2%, lets look at this 3 tier effect on the price of a product.
Lets quote an example, a product cost $100
1. cost of product
cost of manufacturing(2%) + utilities(up) + rental(up) + GST(2%) + transport(up) = more than 2% of $100
2. Lets look at the supply network
raw materials(+2%) + manufacturer (+2%) + distributor (+2%) + retailer (+2%) = CONSUMER = more than 2% of $100
3. Rounding up of figures
plus there is no more 1cent, so every level of the supply chain than to round up the figures, e.g, $15.56 = $15.60 or $16.
CONCLUSION: ITS NOT JUST 2% IF U FACTOR IN ALL THE COST AND CHAINS!!!!
p.s. if u observe commodities, raw material prices worldwide have been rising, like steel and cotton due to China's insurging market.
p.s. our dear govt has raise the electrical, water, gas , transport cost.

The Prime Minister made the announcement when responding to the issues raised by MPs over 4 days of debate - among them the widening income gap in Singapore as a result of globalisation.
Stressing that globalisation is here to stay, and Singaporeans will have to deal with its impact, Mr Lee said this is something that could strain the country's social compact, and this is why it is essential that there will be a whole set of measures to tilt playing field in favour of lower income group.
Adding that the GST increase will help finance enhanced social safety nets to help this group, Mr Lee said it was better to raise the GST when the economy is doing well. - CNA /dt

Raising GST to 7% means helping the lower income group?
The higher GST means the more the lower income group will suffer,
because percentage wise their pay would be proportionally more
strained than the millionaire ministers and their millionaire group.
Increase income tax of those rich and use the money to help the poor will
be the right thing to do in order to help the lower income group.
The clearly shows that his words are empty! -

I hate to complain... But I dun really like this... The hike will affect the middle class and the poor the most... Small businesses will be more difficult than ever... Commodities trading kinda of businesses will die pain pain...
I think wat the government wants is for its people to develop businesses with high profit margins. Instead of those high cost low margins type... If this, most of its citizen in order to live w/o ending its life on mrt tracks will need to be at least a degree holder.... This is oso to prevent those wif slightly bigger Start-up capital(note singaporean's high saving rate) from "Rolling" their $$ doing businesses which are not knowledge-intensive. Income gap widening sH.IT~!
No choice... Any progressing developed nations will be gg through the same sh.IT coz of Globalisation. The weak getting weaker. The key here is how do we get around it? Any legal entities we can somehow "claim" back our GST? I'm not sure if we could discuss this openly in a forum...

Interesting.. I was wondering when this day will come. I can hear those familiar words 'See, I told you' resonating from those who actually saw it coming during the last GE. Pitiful Singaporeans (Majority, not all) who cling on to their wallet purses, only for their purse strings to be loosened without their control.
