If everyone will be elite, then there will be no elite. There must exist commoners so people like LHL and the MPs can say get out of my elite uncaring face.Originally posted by sans-culotte:I know what he is trying to do. SINGAPORE: The Goods and Services Tax will be increased to 7 percent, up from 5 percent presently - this was announced by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in Parliament on Monday.
Mr Lee said more details will be given in next year's Budget Speech which has been scheduled for 15 February.
The Prime Minister made the announcement when responding to the issues raised by MPs over 4 days of debate - among them the widening income gap in Singapore as a result of globalisation.
Stressing that globalisation is here to stay, and Singaporeans will have to deal with its impact, Mr Lee said this is something that could strain the country's social compact, and this is why it is essential that there will be a whole set of measures to tilt playing field in favour of lower income group.
Adding that the GST increase will help finance enhanced social safety nets to help this group, Mr Lee said it was better to raise the GST when the economy is doing well. - CNA /dt

tourist can claim back gstOriginally posted by gerrykoh:GST increase is also bad for the economy- most tourists will go to HK, M'sia, Thailand where things are cheaper.
The middle class will get poorer.
The rich won't be affected due to recent cuts in their income tax.
Expect everything will go up- your sch. fees, PUB, petrol, food, tel. bills etc
Blame the stupid 66.6% who voted for Pay & Pay!
Remember to put on your knee breaches. Anyway, jumping on the MRT track is far from the sans-culotte way.Originally posted by sans-culotte:I know what he is trying to do. He is pushing all the poor to the corner. Then one by one will jump down the MRT tracks. Then left who?? The elites!!!

They never distort, they GARBLE the message. For those who uses maths to understand English: distort =/= ("!=", this one is for programmers) garble.Originally posted by ObiterDicta:I don't think the local media distorted his message, since one gets pretty much the same impression from watching the Taiwanese news on cable TV.

Li Ao was comparing the people in some major cities. He said HKers are craftier then he said Singaporeans are stupid because they just whine when some unfair things happen to them but still choose the whinging path.
Then our Gahmen Mouth just report this, "Li Ao say Singaporeans are stupid."
Did they distort Li Ao's message? No. Li Ao indeed said Singaporeans are stupid.
Did they give our citizens the full message? No. That is what we call garble.[/b]
